The appellate division of the State Supreme Court sided with an outdoors journalist who was sued, and could open up miles of waterways across New York State to paddlers.

Kudos to all the hardworking professionals who helped over a dozen hikers in peril in the past two weeks alone.

Here is a synopsis of recent state forest ranger rescues in the southern and central Adirondacks, from the state Department of Environmental Conservation. There are always some interesting tidbits as

Bright, beautiful fall colors are continuing to emerge in New York State, with the most significant changes this weekend expected in some of the higher elevations of the Adirondacks and Catskills regions, and the Thousand Islands-Seaway region. So many great pictures come from Indian Head and Fish Hawk Cliffs -- and it is a relatively easy hike for such a view. Added to my list for next time I am in the area.

A hike up Indian Head and Fish Hawk Cliffs is a must for every hiker's bucket list. From the summits take time to enjoy the incredible views of the Lower and Upper Ausable Lakes. Just my opinion, one of the finest views in the Adirondacks.

Can't beat this kind of view for hiking just over a third of a mile and 120 feet vertically -- yes, 120 vertical feet!

The soulful cry of the Common Loon is the sound which evokes the feeling of wilderness in many state parks. In summer these handsome birds are regally patterned in black and white, and from fall through winter, they are plain gray above and white below. Loons have legs which are positioned extremely far back on their bodies, which are a great adaptation for swimming and diving, but it also means that loons are extremely awkward on land. In fact, loons can only take off from the water, and they need a long “runway” in order to do so. In addition to needing lots of space, loons prefer quiet areas, away from noisy human activities, so the natural bodies of water in our larger state parks provide important habitat for this shy water bird. Take a listen to their call: http://ow.ly/yYbd5

Cool fact: Loons are expert anglers, diving underwater without a splash to catch fish, and they often swallow their prey underwater. Loons have sharp, rearward-pointing projections on the roof of their mouth and tongue, this helps them retain a firm grip on slippery fish. Photo: Matt MacGillivray
