Well, the results are in and the word is out. Unfortunately, it does not look like I'll be representing WPC (this time). The unofficial results so far for WPC Commission Seat 3 are:
Laurie Carson - 692 votes (52.11%)
Don Southworth - 636 votes (47.89%)
These results are not official as the Clerk's office still has to count any mailed-in ballots that have not yet arrived. So even though it's very close, I realize that it is unlikely that the pending votes will make up the difference.
So while I did not win, I still feel victorious. I entered this race as a relatively unknown political outsider and still was able to successfully shake things up. I was told multiple times that I did not have a chance in this race, but only came 56 votes short (give or take). This is in spite of the COVID-19 epidemic that greatly hindered my ability to campaign the way I wanted. But I can still hold my head up high knowing that I conducted a clean campaign and did not get involved in the dirty side of politics.
I also want to give my sincerest thanks and appreciation to all of you who supported me. But most importantly, I want to thank my beautiful wife, Jen, for her tremendous support and for helping me to always stay motivated. There are many others who gave their support and assistance to me; from helping with campaign designs/strategy, passing out flyers, giving guidance, putting a sign in your yard, or even just kind words - and for this, I am incredibly thankful. It is truly humbling to think about all of you who have supported me throughout this adventure.
Further, I am so proud to be a WPC resident! I'm not sure what the final turnout percentage is, but it looks like turnout for the primary election may be near fifty percent! That is awesome and a testament as to how people are paying attention and choosing to get involved. I will not make any decisions right now, but I imagine that WPC has not seen the last of me!
And finally, I want to congratulate my opponent, Laurie Carson. She's been in this business a long time, but I hope that the pressure I put on her will motivate her to do great things and not get stagnant. I pray for guidance for her and the other Commissioners and look forward to seeing what the future holds. I believe that White Pine County's best days are not in the past, but remain to be seen.
Again, THANK YOU!!!
