1. Burden Falls
📍 20 miles from the Airbnb - Burden Falls Wilderness, Shawnee National Forest
One of the tallest in Illinois, with an upper and lower falls cascade. It’s especially dramatic after rainfall.

2. Bell Smith Springs Waterfalls
📍 28 miles from the Airbnb - Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area
A scenic area with multiple small waterfalls, clear pools, and rock formations. Great for hiking and swimming.

3. Ferne Clyffe Waterfall
📍 40 miles from Airbnb - Ferne Clyffe State Park, Goreville, IL
One of the most accessible waterfalls, reached via a short, easy hike. Beautiful in all seasons.

4. Rocky Bluff Trail Waterfall
📍 38 miles from Airbnb - Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge
A seasonal, peaceful waterfall located along a quiet forest loop trail.

5. Cedar Falls

Earlier this month, southeastern Illinois and southern Indiana faced a devastating weather event characterized by severe storms and historic flooding. A slow-moving weather system from April 2-6 brought multiple rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding across the Tri state. Some areas received between 10 to 15 inches of rain, causing the Ohio River to reach major and near-record levels. We were able to grab some shots of highway 13 between Shawneetown and Hill House of Equality, Illinois this morning, along with some screen recordings from local news stations. The crop fields are still inches beneath rain water and have come together as one body stretching as far as the eye can see.

One positive thing about flash flooding here is: the beautiful waterfalls and in Shawnee National Forest. Hiking With Shawn has posted some amazing content from his travels to Burden Falls and beyond over the last couple weeks.

Fortunately, we’re on a hill. So no rain storm is stopping this base for adventure. Only one weekend left in April! Book your stay at the link in our bio, and come see for yourself.
