While most of my posts are centered around client appreciation, as I return to my full time job as an educator tomorrow for the start of the school year, I wanted to take a moment to say how thankful I am for the group of charter captains and fishermen I got to call friends this summer. The charter season can get long and not every day is all it’s cracked up to be. I am very grateful to have a support system of guys that I couldn’t do it without. Whether you were one of the ones I talked to every day, or one I would see in passing at the docks or cleaning station, you made an impact. From helping each other dock a boat, to cracking jokes at the cleaning station, to helping clean a few fish, offering some ice cream, to stealing a slice of pizza out of my mouth as I’m about to take a bite!- These are memories I will never forget. The charter captains at Lampe are truly some of the best fishermen that would do anything to help each other out, and for that I am grateful to be a part of that community. To the guys in my inner circle, each of you possess positive traits that I aim to have at some point in my life. Thanks for some great memories this summer boys!

Kyle was the winner of the Mound Grove Golf Course Shriners’ charity trip. Kyle put in 2 tickets to win the charter trip and had to sink a 10 foot putt when his name was pulled, and that he did! He brought 2 buddies and we headed out at 11am for the mid-day grind. Just like yesterday, it was a slow start. I had Capt. Tim working his tail off in the cockpit doing everything he could to get bites. I was trying my best on the wheel to stay on the fish and mix up the presentation. We were able to chip away and made sure these guys got their fish. They went away happy with some beautiful fillets in the cooler. Mound Grove is a great establishment that we are proud to support. Congrats again Kyle.

Jason and Josh joined us from south of Pittsburgh for the morning bite. They enjoyed a morning of awesome fishing, with several quality fish hitting the box. These guys had a good time sharing some banter with Capt. Tim and we had them back to the dock before the heat picked up. Hope to see you boys back next season!

Tyler has become a familiar face on the boat, and he is always a welcomed guest. He brought a few new buddies with him from “middle of nowhere” PA. The mid-day bite started out super tough, with light winds. After about 2 hrs of searching and the wind finally picking up, we started to smash some quality fish. We went from zero to hero in no time and all the stories Tyler told his buddies about how great of a trip it is on the boat finally came to fruition. Captain Levi pulled some tricks out of his hat and showed he really knows how to work through tough conditions to put fish in the boat. Another great trip is in the books for Tyler.

Jay and Sandy joined us all the way from Vermont to experience some great walleye fishing on Lake Erie. They booked back to back days and caught some great fish, even on a rainy day 2. The stories and pictures about the number of Perch they catch up there had us fascinated, but they will be back for the Lake Erie Gold.

What a perfect morning on the lake for Bob! Caught several nice fish and a bonus steelhead. Made it off the water for his mid morning coffee. Always great having him on the boat.

Day 2 is in the books. The Dirty 30 boat set out on a jigging mission today being down a mate. The bite was good in the early morning, boxing several nice fish. Although we were looking for 6 bigs, by 9:00 almost every fish in the box was solid and over 19”, but no giants. We knew 12 mile was only a few big bites away from closing in on the day 1 lead, so we fueled up on bologna and cheese to keep grinding. With 23 fish in the box, we planned to pack it up and head back to weigh in after the next fish. I set out an Ol’School Dearie and as soon as it got to depth, it got smashed. With the last fish, we put a 29 incher in the box and rode home to victory. 12 mile did the best they could to win (if you know you know😂), but in the end we became 2X champs. Final weights for 2 days: Dirty 30-42.91lbs, 12 Mile-31.89. Both boats had a blast and this is such a fun yearly deal. Huge thanks to Capt. Kyle for purchasing the trophies, Austin and Lucas for mating, Capt. Rob for being patient at the cleaning station while we hogged the tables with our shenanigans, and most importantly, the guys who are crazy enough to keep coming back to fish with us. YOU are what make us keep striving to be the best charters on the water and we can’t thank you enough. Haven’t had a day off in July, so finally made it to the family camp to decompress for a couple days before we are back at it.

Day 1 of the 2nd Annual Dirty 30 vs. 12 Mile Walleye Bash is in the books. Each team weighed their 6 best walleye. Dirty 30 weighed in 22.78lbs, while 12 Mile brought 16.49lbs to the scale. I have Chris’ crew jigging tomorrow, as we are down our top mate Lucas because he has to go and turn 21 tonight. It’s anyone’s ball game and the winner after day 2 will have another year of bragging rights. Love fishing this derby with my long time clients, and now friends and the comradery of bringing all of us together. Keep posted for day 2!

I can honestly say today may have been the roughest conditions I have fished on Erie is a looooong time. The 3-5 footers they called for were all of 5-7’s with some bigger ones mixed in. Larry, Adam, and John have fished with me for 3 seasons now and they are here for their annual 3-day tour. We had to cancel yesterday due to storms and high winds, but I gave them the option to fish today…with fair warning. The boys wanted to go, so we set out and headed straight into the waves going 7mph all the way out. We stopped and let her drift and began dragging some harnesses. There was no standing during this trip, as it looked like we all were 3 sheets to the wind. The boys grinded it out and worked through a bunch of sheeps to catch 11 eyes. Heading out with no expectation in these conditions, we were all happy to catch fish and make it back safe to fish another day. Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit more manageable and the fish are in big trouble!

Marty came all the way from Naples, FL and was supposed to have a buddy join him for a 2-man jigging trip. His friend cancelled, so we set off with Marty having the boat to himself. This meant I got to wet a line as well. We put twin 6’s in the boat, among several other nice fish. The jig bite was solid until the lake went flat and brought the bite to a halt. These FishUSA Flagship rods paired with a Lew’s or Diawa spinning reel is all you need to have more fun than you can imagine. What a beautiful morning.
