Had a fun day running a lake trout trip for Crawl Daddy Fishing aboard his 25ft Carolina. Clients enjoyed a mix bag of big lake trout, as well as a few nice walleye mixed in. The highlight of the day was an 89 year old vet reeling in the fish of a lifetime. It brought his 62 year old son to tears on the boat knowing how special these moments are. He told me the key to life is, “At least one alcoholic beverage a day and about a stick of butter a day.” It’s also amazing to think about how so many great charter captains are willing to come together to help prior to a trip to make sure that every visitor to Erie has an amazing experience, no matter who they book with. This shows how strong of a fishing community we have here in Erie, and I said this multiple times this week…It pays to have good friends! (you know who you are). It’s been a looooong day, now off to chase some bronze backs tomorrow from sun up to sun down.

Awesome weekend of fishing on Presque Isle Bay with some great clients and boat guests. Saturday started off with clients joining me from Minnesota and the cloud cover, cooler temps and wind had the fish in a funk. By the afternoon, the sun came out and wind laid down and we were able to capitalize on a short bite window. After discussing some plans for the upcoming walleye season with Capt. Wayne and First Mate Tim, we set out for a quick beat down on some afternoon smallies. The wind started ripping 20+ out of the West and that was that. Sunday was a new day, and after doing some much needed tackle prep on the big boat for Lake Trout and Walleye trips, I set out to finally fish for myself for the first time this season. It was truly one of those special days on the water that only come a few times a year. I gave my dad a call and told him to load up the pups and meet me for a few hours to join in on the bite. We enjoyed an afternoon crushing smallies together and working around these crazy dogs hook up after hook up. Every day, every hour the fishing changes, so stay positive.

Kip and Rick enjoyed a nice 70 degree afternoon and a forecasted “light southwest wind”. This was by no means the case, and we quickly found ourself fishing in a sustained west wind of upwards of 20mph all evening. This made for challenging conditions, but Kip was out with me earlier this season for Perch and proved he is a great angler. Rick was all for doing whatever it took to stay on the fish as well. Although we could have caught more if we would have stayed put, we did a little spot hopping just to catch a break from the wind. Given the conditions, these guys had a good afternoon. I guess when there not rain, snow or freezing temps in Erie, it should celebrated.

After a tough week of fishing in stiff north and west winds, the fish finally decided to cooperate today. A crew from VA came up Thursday to do a reconnaissance mission before they started their 3-day fishing excursion. We found fish staging in 12ft flats with rock and some fish on shallower flats hanging in 4-5ft ditches. The strong west wind had them a bit tight lipped Thursday. Took Jim, Pam and the birthday boy Callen back to the same fish today and they put a beat down on them. Water temps were pretty solid, holding at 62 degrees at most stops. A 40+ fish smallmouth day for a 12-year old and his family is a memory he will hold on to for a lifetime. No open Saturday’s left in May. Only Sundays, some weeknights, and Friday the 22nd.
