United hands you a caramel stroopwafel on the flight. Then I went and ordered a tomato juice. I do not know what came over me.

Reader, the two together are unreal. Sweet caramel cookie. Cold savory tomato juice. It should not work. It completely works. Better then a well oiled machine off the factory floor.

Turns out there is a reason. The dry pressurized cabin dulls your sweet and salty senses. The savory stuff comes through stronger. That is why half the plane orders tomato juice and nobody orders it on the ground.

Pair that with a warm caramel waffle and you have a five star tasting menu at 35,000 feet for the price of a seat.

I am not saying book a flight just for the snack. I am also not not saying that.

Spent some time at the airport today watching people get turned away at security. Not one or two. A steady stream.

Same mistake every time. They walked up to the PreCheck or CLEAR lane without belonging to either one. The agent waves them off. Back to the regular line they go, now at the very end.

It holds up everyone behind them. The person it hurts most is them. That is the one now power walking to the gate with a backpack and a bad attitude.

Worth knowing the difference. PreCheck is the government program that gets you a faster lane where your shoes and laptop stay put. CLEAR is a private service that verifies your ID and walks you to the front. You can have one, both, or neither. Standing in the wrong line does not sign you up for anything.

None of this is hard. It is just one of those details nobody mentions until you are the one holding up the line.

That is the part I handle. The boring stuff that saves your morning.

Somebody booked a cruise this week hoping for a calm and quiet trip. No kids. Just good food. A few drinks. A relaxing week at sea.

The ship they picked is Utopia of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean calls it the world's biggest weekend. It runs short three and four night Bahamas getaways packed with families, first timers, and people who want loud fun on a short trip. Quiet is not the point of that boat.

That is not a bad traveler. That is a good traveler who picked the wrong ship.

This is the whole reason I do what I do. I ask what you actually want before you put any money down. You want calm and grown up and relaxing? There are ships built for exactly that.

Booking a trip is easy. Booking the right trip is the part people miss.

Stop planning every minute of your vacation. You're ruining it.

I get it. You waited all year for this trip. You saved for it. You researched it. You have a spreadsheet with color coded tabs and a Pinterest board with 47 pins. You want it to be perfect.

That's the problem. Perfect doesn't leave room for the good stuff.

The best meal I've ever had on a trip was at a place with no menu in English, plastic chairs, and a line out the door. A taxi driver told us about it. It wasn't on any list.

The best afternoon I've ever had in port was when we skipped the planned excursion and just walked. One more block. Then one more. Found a bakery run by a woman who didn't speak a word of English but handed my kid a free cookie and waved us in like we were family.

None of that was on the spreadsheet.

Plan the things that matter. Your flights. Your cabin. Your travel insurance. The stuff that goes sideways if you get it wrong.

Then leave room for the stuff you didn't see coming. Talk to the bartender. Ask the front desk clerk where they eat on their day off. Walk past the tourist strip and see what's actually there.

The families who have the best vacations aren't the ones who planned the most. They're the ones who planned the right things and then let the trip happen.

Stop white knuckling the magic moment. It doesn't work.

A lot of people are seeing headlines about hantavirus right now and getting nervous about their upcoming trips. Here is what you actually need to know.

Hantavirus is carried by rodents. Not people. Human to human transmission is extremely rare. You get it from breathing in particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. That means poorly maintained cabins, dusty sheds, and areas with active rodent problems.

It does not mean your cruise ship. It does not mean your resort. It does not mean the airport.

The CDC recommends simple precautions if you are traveling to rural areas. Avoid places where rodents nest. Wash your hands. Store food properly. That is basically it.

Travel smart. Not scared. And if you have questions about health advisories for your specific destination, that is exactly the kind of thing I help with before you ever leave home.
