Serengeti national park lions are the only big cats that live in family groups called prides.
These social groups are made up of related female lions, their offspring, and a coalition of two or three male lions who defend the territory and help raise the cubs.
Living in prides allows lions to cooperate in hunting larger prey, share responsibilities, and protect themselves from rivals and predators.
Components of a pride:
The core of the pride, typically consisting of mothers, sisters, and daughters, who form the main hunting force.
Male lions:
A coalition of usually two or three unrelated males, often brothers or cousins, who join a pride to protect it and defend their territory from other males.
Benefits of living in a pride:
Cooperative hunting:
Lions work together to ambush and take down larger prey, such as buffalo, which they could not hunt alone.
