Roaming Free We are a family of 5 traveling on our 50 ft boat! Follow us on instagram

In August 2014, we moved from our stationary home to a 27-foot home on wheels and set off on the journey of a lifetime. Fast forward to 2025 we are traveling and exploring on our boat on the East Coast, Bahamas and Caribbean as a family of 5.

The last couple weeks ✨ We had our first visitor (Brandon’s mom) and the girls were in heaven having her all to themselves for several days. Mornings at the beach, afternoons at the pool, loads of good food, lots of card games.

After we left Cape Eleuthera, we had the glassiest day at sea on our way north. Spanish Wells was adorable; the swings were a favorite, as was the golf cart we rented for a day. The neighboring beaches had amazing padded starfish and great snorkeling.

Our days move at a different pace here. We homeschool where it fits (the girls have been loving our Around the World study and learning about every ocean animal, especially those we’ve seen in the Bahamas) and explore when we can.

Everything depends on the weather, which is a major difference with land life. Whether or not we leave the boat for the day depends on if we can do so easily and safely. Some days are a lot of back porch baby swings, YouTube exercise videos, boat projects, reading, magnatile castles, sourdough testing, and enjoying sunsets that look painted on the sky. Some nights (re: a few nights ago) are spent on very exhausting ocean crossings so the girls can sleep through them.

And they are all good days 🫶🏼

Every homeschool day is different (which is probably why we like it so much). This particular day we were moving about 8 hours and the seas were perfect, so we got math and ELA knocked out for my 1st grader and some Pre-K done with my 4 y/o. We’re doing an “around the world” study with both girls for geography so then we studied Russia and made paper matryoshka dolls 🪆

And of course, so much learning takes place outside of the book work we do. The girls learn strategy from chess and card games, oceanography from the world around them, engineering from lessons about operating the boat. It’s such a cool way to learn!

“I want to live on a boat one day and travel the world” 👈🏼
My husband, within an hour of me meeting him 15 years ago 😅

I thought he was nuts. Good thing I came around 🤍

Come with us as we cross from the Exumas to Eleuthera 🛥️ We had family flying into Eleuthera and one decent-looking crossing day before some major winds, so we took the window. The first half (especially making the cut out of Black Point) was rolly but it smoothed out as the day went on.

Cape Eleuthera is a 4,000 acre marina and resort set apart from pretty much everything else on the island. It has a gorgeous beach with tons of crabs which have completely delighted my girls (and a lovely pool). We haven’t stayed in a marina in quite some time. It’s been nice having AC and easy access to throw away trash lol but we prefer anchoring. Especially me, as I get eaten by no-see-ums 😅

One crazy thing about this marina…is they have 7 or 8 resident bull sharks in the marina that are fed chum regularly. We docked our boat and it looked like Jaws was swimming under us 🫠 If you need a reminder to not swim anywhere near marinas, let this be it.

We’ve been happy to be here with family. Taking off tomorrow to explore more of Eleuthera.

Spend the day with us as we travel further south in the Exumas 🛥️ Not all days are beach trips – some days we actually don’t even get off the boat. And yes, it’s still a great day 👏🏼

We’re off to find some swimming pigs!

The *honest* answer to this question is, of course they miss out on certain things with land life! They miss their friends and family, they aren’t doing dance and soccer, they miss being able to have unlimited access to fresh fruit 😂

And…they’re gaining so, so much. They get to swim with turtles on a random Tuesday and see so much of the world. They make friends immediately and easily with other boat kids of all ages. They get to learn at their own pace, about things they’re truly interested in. And we get so much time together.

So yes, they miss out on some things. Like everything else, there’s a trade off. And right now, this is exactly where we’re supposed to be ✌🏼

We got lucky with some friends anchoring nearby who snapped this earlier today. What a thing 🥹🌈•••••

Roaming Free is getting a handful up upgrades and maintenance this month. This past week we got the wireless docking remote installed. It’s incredible how easy docking is now - walking around with a wireless remote that controls the engine, bow, and stern thrusters.

We closed out 2023 in a very exciting way: by closing on our dream live-aboard boat! 🎉

It’s been 10 years since we began Roaming Free. In 2013, we let our lease expire and moved into our 27-foot travel trailer. Megan, initially skeptical, thought it would be a short-lived adventure. Little did we know it would evolve from a few months into a few years, transitioning from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel, and roaming all over the west coast.

When we originally designed our Roaming Free logo, we included an RV and a boat to represent our current and future travel aspirations. Living aboard a boat has been a dream of mine for more than two decades.

Health reasons and the birth our two amazing kids had us halting our full-time travels—and honestly, we weren’t sure we’d ever get the chance to fulfill the dream of life on the water.

But a few months ago we came across our future boat – a 2003 Nordhavn 50. Nordhavn, renowned for crafting ocean-crossing boats, produced only 27 of this particular model, with only a few built in our desired configuration.

With a 3,000+ mile fuel range, a water-maker for freshwater conversion, a wing (backup engine), stabilizer fins for minimal roll, and ample fridge and freezer space for months on the water, it is ready for pretty much anything we throw at it.

The upcoming year will be dedicated to learning, with shorter trips along the East Coast. Our future plans include exploring the Bahamas, Caribbean, and crossing the Atlantic to Europe. We’re excited to document and share our journey as we get closer to living aboard! 🛥️✨

Before this summer, neither of us had visited Olympic National Park. It has turned out to be one of our favorite places in the West...we'll definitely be back.
