🍰 🚢 ”Cake Me Away,” a complimentary cake buffet normally offered in the afternoon on the last sea day of Holland America cruises, is one of the reasons I love the line. One of the reasons? Ha, THE reason. The cakes taste as good as they look and you can try as many slices as you want. You should know though that after the event they put scales outside every elevator to make sure you don’t exceed the weight limit. Seriously, I took a photo for proof.

I put a single toe on that scale and, honest truth, just that toe alone weighed more than my entire body did upon embarkation 13 days ago. But then I got right in the elevator anyway because even this claustrophobe would welcome getting stuck instead of having to disembark tomorrow, “ don’t worry about me, just toss down my customary 15 meals per day and sail on toward Greece!” 😀🍰🚢❤️

Hot tip for cheap-as* (I mean budget conscious) Holland America cruisers: Pinnacle Grill (HAL’s specialty steakhouse) is $30 less ($25 vs $55) at lunch and it’s almost the exact same menu. I opted to use some of my remaining non-refundable onboard credit to dine there. I don’t ever pay out-of-pocket for specialty restaurants on HAL because the included food is such high quality, but this was definitely my best meal so far. The pasta dish was so rich and flavorful with a little kick from the peppers. The best part though? Since I was dining solo, I got the whole bread basket and dish of garlic butter to my ooooooown self! Here’s what I ordered and the lunch menu.

The Oosterdam left Portugal and arrived in…Great Britain? I got very confused when I arrived in Gibraltar and saw red phone booths and heard everyone conversing in English. Yes, I’ll admit I thought north was whichever way you were facing until I was like 23 and many of my travel companions have harrowing stories of hopelessly lost misadventures, BUT upon further study of the map, we were clearly supposed to be in SPAIN!!!

It turns out Gibraltar is a British territory south of Spain and I deleted the text I had cued up to tell my brother I’d be 2-5 days late arriving in Madrid.

Something else I learned from the map. The Rock of Gibraltar is only 9 nautical miles from Morocco. I could actually SEE Africa from the Europa Point Lighthouse (photo 1). This is cool anyway, but it’s especially meaningful to me as Africa is my last remaining continent. While I’m determined to actually put foot to earth, I might just Sarah Palin that sh*t and claim I’ve been there in the meantime. I mean, I SAW IT.

Anyway, I spent half my port day wandering around town and the other half hiking and exploring all over the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Here are some photos of the lighthouse and mosque at Europa Point and of the town.

I’ve seen some amazing (amazing!) wildlife on cruises, but these Barbary macaques on the Rock of Gibraltar have secured a spot near the top of my list. They’re the only wild monkeys in Europe. 🐒🚢

It’s noon on Sunday, so you know what that means? Church? No. Errands? No. Chores? Oh hell no. Nap? Yes, but later. It means BRUNCH. This will be the 2nd Sunday brunch on this sailing and today’s menu is completely new. I cannot overstate how delicious everything was, how much this meal would have cost me in Seattle, and how much weight I’ve gained so far on this cruise. 🤤💵🐷
