Breaking Down the Ballot with Move Texas and the Office of Student Identity and Engagement.

It's critical that you take the time to fully understand your ballot, know the platforms of your candidates, and develop a clear voting plan. Here's how to make your voice count:

1. Break Down the Ballot

Election ballots can be confusing, but taking a few steps to familiarize yourself with them will ensure that you're making informed decisions. Before heading to the polls:

Research the Positions: Identify what offices are up for election—local, state, and federal. Some positions may not be familiar to you, but they often have a significant impact on your daily life.

Read the Measures: In addition to candidates, there may be propositions, amendments, or referendums on the ballot. Make sure you understand the potential impact of these measures.

2. Know Your Candidates' Platforms

It’s important to know more than just the names on the ballot. Understand each candidate's positions on key issues that matter to you, such as:

Education: Where do they stand on funding for colleges and universities?

Healthcare: Do they support expanding healthcare access or making changes to insurance options?

Social Justice: How do they approach issues related to equity, diversity, and civil rights?

Environment: Are they committed to sustainable practices and fighting climate change?

Take time to visit their websites and read credible news sources. Knowing a candidate’s platform will help you make informed choices aligned with your values.

3. Have a Voting Plan

Planning ahead ensures that your vote is cast and counted. Consider the following:

Choose a Voting Method: Will you be voting in person or by mail? If by mail, request your absentee ballot as early as possible to avoid delays.

Find Your Polling Location: If voting in person, know your polling place and hours of operation.

Vote Early if Possible: Early voting can help you avoid long lines and last-minute issues on Election Day.

Remember, voting is one of the most powerful ways to influence change in your community and country. Make your voice heard!

Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, provides an important opportunity to recognize the impactful presence of Hispanic and Latino students in higher education. These students bring diverse cultural backgrounds, languages, and experiences that enrich academic institutions across the United States.

The growth in Hispanic/Latino enrollment has been significant in recent years. This growing presence has not only contributed to a more diverse student body but has also influenced institutional policies and initiatives focused on equity, inclusion, and support for underrepresented groups.

Hispanic and Latino students have also contributed greatly to the intellectual and cultural landscape of universities. Their participation in student organizations, cultural events, and academic programs that celebrate their heritage has created spaces for dialogue around issues of race, ethnicity, and identity. In fields ranging from business to science, law, and the arts, Hispanic alumni have made substantial contributions, while also advocating for the needs of their communities.

By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the profound influence Hispanic and Latino students have on shaping more inclusive, diverse, and equitable educational environments. Their presence is a testament to the strength of cultural diversity in higher education and the critical role they play in fostering a future where all voices are heard and valued.

In coming together across institutional, racial, and cultural divides, these students are modeling a future where justice is not simply punitive but restorative, where liberation is collective, and where humanity's interconnectedness is recognized and cherished. The collective consciousness emerging from HBCUs and PWIs is a blueprint for a society grounded in love, compassion, dignity, and reconciliation—where justice is not just an aspiration but a lived reality.

When we learn about those who came before us, we stand on their shoulders. And with that elevated view, we are called to see further, do more, and fight harder for a better tomorrow. The torch has been passed—what will you do with it?
