After booking cruises for 10 years, here’s the pattern I see:

•You want to go on a trip.
•You pick a destination / trip type.
•You call your peeps and try to wrangle them up to get the trip out of the group chat
•You then get confirmation from your peeps and start your searching

And this is where 💩 hits the fan….

You’re now overwhelmed because the internet gave you 1 million ideas for every tiny thing.

You don’t know what to book.

You’re so overwhelmed that you close out your browser and doom scroll or binge a show.

You need to stop adding “best” when doing your travel research.

Why? Because “best” is a relative term. It’s just as relative as “cheap” or “expensive.”

The person (or group of people) telling you this experience is the best are not taking in your needs or wants for a vacation. They’re giving you an opinion.

While they may think this experience is the best, it could be a total disaster for you in some way. Whether it’s budget, time, effort, or anything else.

Do yourself a favor and don’t add “best” when doing any travel research.

Instead, work with a travel advisor who specializes in the destination or trip type. You’ll have a much better vacation this way 😎

That’s right. I said it.

While cruise lines can say they are “family-friendly”, it doesn’t mean it’s the best for your family.

When doing your research on cruises, you need to look into some small details like this because it can put a damper on your vacation.

Cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Disney have specific areas where little ones can splash in the pool. Some other lines don’t offer this exact experience and makes a pool day stressful.

This one mistake almost ruined our cruise vibe….

Let me set the scene:

We’re cruising out of Fort Lauderdale. It’s our first time visiting the area. We know NOTHING about the hotels here.

Bonus - we’re all trying to stay within budget. It’s one night, how bad could a hotel possibly be.

Welp. Color me shocked.

This hotel SUCKED. It was $160 per room when it should have been less. Like….you’re charging Hilton prices here, honey!!

Needless to say…we won’t be staying there again AND we know where we will be staying.

I thought this cruise add-on was a luxury. Turns out, I was wrong.

“What is it?” You may ask. Well, it’s the thermal suite pass offered onboard.

You may have the option of a day pass or a full voyage pass. This depends on the popularity during your cruise.

On my recent cruise, I opted for the voyage pass. I had access to the different showers, heated loungers, hot tubs, and saunas. Best part? It was adults only!

This means it was quiet with no kids allowed and it became my favorite reading spot.

It was also the perfect place to watch the ship sail away.

Okay now, hear me out:

While these videos may give you FOMO, I’m talking about how the video feels.

Do you see it? Fast paced. Little downtime. Not a single moment of relaxation.

Port days are filled with activities and a rush back to the ship. There’s no time to get ready for dinner or shows. You’re booked every moment from the time you wake up until you go to sleep.

If your cruises don’t have downtime built in, then you’re ending up in the same space as you do at home. Stressed. Burnt out. Tired.

That’s not how a cruise should be when you know you need time away from the stress.

This is the moment I know our flight from Oahu back to Detroit, Michigan was a mistake….

Let me be real for a sec. I booked this options because it was the lowest fare. Directly with American Airlines. However, the departure back home consisted of two stops.

This is when I figured it was a mistake - we realized that our first stop went from Oahu to Maui. We’d be here for 3-4 hours just sitting in the airport. Not only that, it was operated by Hawaiian Airlines. This means our check-in was difficult since the flights were bought on American and we couldn’t change the flights without cancelling and rebooking. We also couldn’t upgrade during the check-in process like you normally can for a flight with American.

Since it was a two-stop itinerary, this also made for a longer travel day. Had I properly checked the connection times, we could have enjoyed the island on our last day for longer.

This is definitely a lesson learned!

Controversial Opinion:

It’s not the destination or vacation you choose, it’s the planned activities you have that’s the problem.

What do I mean exactly? I’m talking about how many activities you have planned in one day, if you scheduled breaks, the time you eat, and more.

This is something you need to think about for your next vacation. There’s nothing worse than not enjoying your trip because you didn’t get enough sleep, you waited too long to eat, or anything else.
