According to the Five Element Theory, the liver is the yin organ of the Wood element. Thus, it embodies the yin energy of Wood which manifests in humans as the ability to develop a vision (on a physical level, the liver is said to “open into the eyes”), plan and see life on a material, intellectual and spiritual level, and to create, expand and grow. It is the energy of birth and rebirth.

The gall bladder, on the other hand, is the yang organ of the Wood element, and it embodies the ability to make decisions and implement our plans and goals in the outer world. Hence, the liver can be compared to an architect and the gall bladder to the builder.
