Fredericksburg Kathmandu Sister City, Fredericksburg, VA (2026)

The Fredericksburg-Kathmandu Sister City initiative grew out of the tremendous outpouring of good will of Virginians and Nepalis who joined together with Rise Nepal and other partners after the tragic 2015 Nepal earthquakes. A civic-led initiative, it includes current and future exchanges fostering cross cultural understanding and positive outcomes in community service and the environment, academic exchanges between the University of Mary Washington and Tribhuvan University in Nepal, arts and culture, business and tourism. The scope includes the broader Kathmandu Valley and Fredericksburg-Rappahannock region, and other Virginia-Nepal Exchange supporters.

Dear Community Members,

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library on Thursday, September 17, for the VA250 Lecture Series and candlelight vigil.

The lecture, *From Monarchy to Republic: Nepal’s 250-Year Journey and Its Deepening Partnership with the United States*, presented by Dr. Lekh Adhikari, offered an opportunity to share Nepal’s history and reflect on the connections between Nepal and the United States. We also heard an update on the flood relief efforts in Nepal coordinated by Engage Nepal. Later that evening, we gathered by candlelight to remember those who lost their lives in the devastating floods and to stand in solidarity with the families and communities affected.

We are grateful to Mayor Kerry Devine, former Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw, Clerk of the City Council Brenda Martin, and Sister Cities International Vice Chair Fred Blanton for their presence and support. We also thank Rev. Joe Hansley, Bishop Joseph Henderson, and Venerable Monks Ajahn and Bhante for bringing moments of reflection and comfort to the vigil.

Our thanks go to Oddbox and Petite Taway for their audiovisual support; the library for providing the venue and logistical assistance; Ambassador Scott DeLisi for sharing an update on relief efforts; and Kathryn Willis for coordinating the lecture series and helping bring the lecture and vigil together.

Finally, we extend our sincere appreciation to the sister cities leadership, the board and members of Fredericksburg–Nepal Exchange, and everyone who attended, volunteered, or supported these events. Your contributions made both gatherings possible and meaningful.

Thank you for strengthening the friendship between Fredericksburg and Kathmandu and for showing compassion for those affected by the floods in Nepal.
