💔 This is heartbreaking... and preventable.

A black bear cub in Sevier County was recently crushed by an unsecured trash container, according to Appalachian Bear Rescue. They're urging everyone - homeowners, cabin owners, property managers, and visitors - to properly secure garbage to help protect the bears we all love to see.

Every time a bear finds an easy meal in human trash, it becomes more comfortable around people. That can lead to dangerous encounters, injuries, or even bears having to be euthanized. Sadly, we've seen this happen far too many times in the Smokies.

If you're visiting the Smokies:

Use bear-resistant trash containers whenever possible.
Never leave garbage outside or beside your cabin.
Don't leave food or trash in your vehicle.
Help keep wild bears... wild.

Seeing a bear is one of the most memorable parts of a Smoky Mountain vacation. A few simple precautions can help make sure they're around for generations to come.

Looking to beat the heat? Head up to Kuwohi, where temperatures are often 10-15 degrees cooler than Gatlinburg. The panoramic views make it one of the best places to escape the summer humidity.

With daily storm chances in the forecast, plan outdoor activities and hikes for the morning whenever possible. If storms develop, it's a great time to explore museums, shops, or indoor attractions in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge before heading back outside later in the day.
