Merry Christmas from us at the Historic Jennie Wade Birthplace! 🎄🎁

Christmas in Gettysburg during the Civil War era carried a quieter, more reflective tone, especially in the winter of 1863. The town was still recovering from the Battle of Gettysburg, and daily life blended remembrance with resilience.

One of the stories most closely tied to this period is that of Jennie Wade, the only confirmed civilian killed during the battle. Just 20 years old, Jennie lost her life while baking bread for Union soldiers, a small but powerful act of care amid chaos.

As Christmas arrived, Gettysburg families focused on rebuilding, honoring loved ones, and finding moments of comfort despite the hardships of war.

For the Wade family and others like them, the season became a time to quietly remember, reflect, and carry forward the spirit of kindness.
