Yours truly (on the left) with Greg Allen, owner of Gettysburg Sentinels. We were at the Camp Letterman witness tree this week filming a video on behalf of Greg's business.

What and where is the Camp Letterman tree? This is a mind-bogglingly massive white oak standing behind the Subway restaurant on the York Pike just east of Gettysburg proper. This tree stands on the northern edge of what was an 80-acre general hospital, created after the Battle of Gettysburg to care for those wounded soldiers whose injuries were so severe that they could not be moved to proper hospitals in Baltimore and other large cities.

Gettysburg Sentinels is the place to go to obtain beautiful, hand-crafted mementoes made of genuine, reclaimed witness tree wood. Visit his website, www.GettysburgSentinels.com today!

In my spare time I volunteer with the Park Service in Gettysburg. I have met so many fascinating stewards of history and nature. My friend, ranger Tom Holbrook (right), has lived for almost three decades in the George Weikert house on United States Avenue in Gettysburg, longer than any other person—whether farmer or park staff employee—ever did. Pretty cool!

A friend recently used the field guides on the battlefield and sent these photos of it in action!
