Let’s talk plants 🌱
Growing zone matters more than most people realize when planning landscaping in the Pacific Northwest. Here in the Fox Island/Gig Harbor area, we are generally considered Zone 8B, which means not all tropical plants will survive our winters long term.
When looking at landscaping for your yard, it’s important to consider:
• Sun exposure
• Soil pH
• Mature plant size
• Growing zone compatibility
Garden centers are FULL of beautiful options this time of year, but those things are important to think about before purchasing plants on impulse.
It’s also important to understand the difference between annuals and perennials — and what your landscaping will realistically look like through every season, not just peak summer bloom.
Ask yourself:
• Will these plants need to be cut back every year?
• Can they handle our heavy winter rain season?
• How will they look when they aren’t blooming?
• Am I comfortable potentially replacing or replanting them?
Good landscaping is not just about what looks pretty today — it’s about creating something that will continue to thrive season after season in the Pacific Northwest climate.
