After a relaxing day at sea, we spent the final full day of our Iceland cruise docked back in Reykjavik overnight. We started with a morning whale watch, but the seas were very rough and only 1 humpback was spotted. We then ended our day at the Sky Lagoon, a great way to end our Icelandic adventure. Now time to pack and head home. We had a great time exploring the spectacular scenery with our wonderful friends!

Yesterday, August 12th, time for the Solar Eclipse! It was a sea day. Astronomer Dr. Erica Ellingson was onboard giving several presentations and also providing commentary while we watched for the experience to unfold. We were escorted to the helipad which is not typically accessible to passengers on the Silhouette. Our Captain worked with the astronomer, closely watching the cloudy weather, to guide us toward the best viewing location. It was extremely cloudy. He did the best he could. Unfortunately, the clouds obscured the total eclipse but we did get some views of the moon partially covering the sun before and after. I think our favorite part was seeing how dark it became except by the horizon. It was still fun and festive!

Yesterday's port was Akureyri Iceland. We crossed into the Arctic Circle the prior evening and some participated in the blue nose ceremony. Despite that, it was an amazing 63 degrees! Thanks to their wonderful travel agent lol, our group of 18 had a free excursion that included stops at the Godafoss waterfall where we spotted 3 rainbows, the Christmas House, and a small botanical garden. We chose to be dropped off in town to shop and eat some local food before heading back to the ship.

Yesterday's stop was in Isafjordur. Weather conditions continued to improve. Sunny with the high around 58. The scenery and size of the mountains cannot be captured in pictures. We had a great trip to a local farm, Gemlufall. Most Icelanders believe in elves and trolls. If something unexpected or unexplained happens, the trolls are blamed. The farm name comes from the troll Gemlu falling down the hill. Their 12 year old son gave a speech about goats mating and he was cursing while doing it! He lost his place a few times and Jim had to use his secret trick to cure the boy's hiccups. We spent time feeding the horses and they gave us hot chocolate with traditional happy marriage cake. We then travelled through 2 tunnels to climb the Dynjandi waterfall. Vehicle tunnels were sometimes 1 lane so there were places to pull over inside to let oncoming traffic pass. Dynjandi is a cascading waterfall and quite high but, photos just do not show that height well. The path was rocky, steep, there were no true handrails, and no protection along the cliff areas so it would be easy to fall. When we got back on our motorcoach, our tour guide even sang a traditional Icelandic song to us!

We boarded Celebrity Silhouette on Saturday to overcast skies but only a short rain shower. On Sunday we docked in Grundafjordur, a very small and remote port. We went on another great excursion with a funny tour guide, Sven. Many movies and tv shows have been filmed in Iceland. Our guide was Brendan Fraser's body double on Journey to the Center of the Earth. We toured the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Stops at Kirkufell, Djupalonssandur Beach, Arnastapi, and the photographic black church. At Arnastapi there are basalt stack formations, nesting sea bird colonies and a sea cliff walk. The area was surrounded by lava rock that looked like we were on another planet and gorgeous mountains. The scenery did not look real. Djupalonssandur Beach is made up of smooth lava stones that made an echo as we walked on them. Remnants of ship wrecks dot the beach. There were 4 lifting stones historically meant to test the strength of men looking for work on fishing boats. if you could lift at least the 3rd heaviest, you were hired on the spot. Jim would be hired! Kirkufell is the most photographed mountain and a setting for Game of Thrones. We saw an area filled with tents set up in preparation for viewing the eclipse.

Today, more rain, torrential at all times but it didn't stop us. Another 10 hour tour, this time the South Coast. Stops at Skogafoss, Solheimajokul Glacier, Reynasfjara black sand beach and sea stacks, Seljalandsfoss, ending with some fun over the tectonic plates.

The Strokkur Geyser and my reaction caught on audio yesterday. Sorry for the camera wobble at the end the geyser caught me by surprise!
