The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area should be at the top of any Southern Oregon Coast adventure list. The Oregon Dunes are among the largest in the world, with some dunes towering 500 feet. Both newcomers and experienced riders are welcome; outfitters rent ATVs (all terrain vehicles) from dune buggies (which seat 4) to side-by-sides (which seat 2) and also offer guided tours. Hikers should plan to explore the heart-pumping John Dellenback Trail near Lakeside, which travels across a moonscape of rolling golden hills stretch all the way to the glorious Pacific Ocean (don’t worry, there are trail markers in the sand).

Glassy water and a gray October sky make this one of the best times of year to paddle the Coquille River. The summer crowds are gone and the marsh grass has turned gold on the banks. Bring an extra layer and paddle out toward the old lift bridge.

From short jaunts to lighthouse to all day summit climbs, the Southern Oregon Coast has a trail for every level hiker. What do they all have in common? Fall color along the Rogue starts early on the riverbank, where it turns gold and rust against all the evergreen. The drive upriver from Gold Beach to Agness is worth it for this view from the bridge. Roll down the windows, and take a slow drive from the coast to forest along the river.
