Go check this out to honor those who have fought and died for this country.

For over 100 years, on Memorial Day, people have gathered at Linn Grove Cemetery to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. This year is no different. American flags will also adorn the more than 2,000 veteran graves there. What a beautiful tradition our city does, and what a wonderful way to start your Memorial Day.

In 2020, scenery that was hand painted were found in the attic. These scenes were used in the shows that were held at the Opera House in 1879. They found more than 250 backdrops that were built.

Here is an article in the New York Times about these amazing pieces of art. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/11/arts/music/opera-sets-leadville.html

One of the most famous performers to grace the stage at the Tabor Opera House was none other than Harry Houdini. During our tour, we learned an intriguing story: when Houdini arrived to perform, the stage didn’t have a trap door—so he reportedly cut one himself. According to local lore, he used it during his act… and vanished through the trap door, never to be seen again. Whether fact or legend, it adds a mysterious twist to the rich history of the Opera House.

Discover the Historic Tabor Opera House Stage

The stage at the Tabor Opera House is a remarkable piece of history and a must-see for visitors. As you ascend the stairs into the grand auditorium, you're greeted by the same stage that once hosted world-renowned performers.

Originally designed to seat 800 guests, the opera house featured rows of elegant red velvet chairs—many of which still remain today, preserving its original charm.

Take a moment to explore the ornate box seats near the front of the stage, once reserved for the wealthiest patrons. Over the years, the auditorium has undergone thoughtful renovations, and it continues to host performances, keeping the spirit of the arts alive.

Have you attended a show here? We'd love to hear about your experience—feel free to share your stories and photos!

Think safety and act safely. You can help keep yourself and other visitors safe and wildlife wild by setting a good example! Remember to treat wildlife with proper caution and respect. The safety of animals, as well as your safety, depends on everyone using good judgment.

🦬 Give animals room.

The best way to stay safe around wildlife is to give animals room to move. Many parks require you to stay a minimum distance of 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from predators like bears and wolves. If you’re close enough for a selfie, you’re definitely too close. Use binoculars or a zoom lens and move back if wildlife approach you.

🦬 Do not disturb.

Even when you’re farther away, leaving wildlife alone can help your viewing experience—plus it’s the law. It’s illegal to feed, touch, tease, frighten, or intentionally disturb wildlife. Remember that wildlife in parks are wild and like Grandma, can be unpredictable when they’re disturbed or surprised.

🦬 Be responsible.

Ultimately, staying safe and keeping wildlife wild is up to you! When you go out into a national park, it’s your responsibility to keep yourself, your family, and the wildlife safe.

The Opera House also housed several offices and apartments, including those of Horace Tabor and the owner of the neighboring Clarendon Hotel, W.H. Bush. The third floor of the Opera House served as an extension of the hotel, connected by a specially built catwalk between the two buildings. Within these historic spaces, visitors can find personal items that once belonged to Horace Tabor and his first wife, Augusta. Additionally, there is a room dedicated to his second wife, Baby Doe Tabor, featuring information and artifacts that tell her story.

One of the rooms on the third floor still houses Horace Tabor’s personal safe. This floor featured a catwalk that connected the Opera House to the Clarendon Hotel, allowing easy passage between the two buildings. According to local history, Horace frequently used this catwalk while having an affair with Baby Doe—long before they were married—stepping out on his first wife, Augusta. At the time, Horace Tabor was one of the wealthiest men in Leadville, but Augusta strongly disapproved of how he spent their fortune. Though divorce was rare and socially difficult in that era, Augusta eventually left him after discovering the affair. This paved the way for Horace to marry Baby Doe. However, their wealth did not last. Following a series of financial misfortunes, the couple lost everything. After Horace’s death, Baby Doe lived out her remaining years in poverty, alone in a cabin near the Matchless mines.

Just a little background history for you about the man behind the Opera House.

The Tabor Opera House is such an amazing place to visit. Horace Tabor built this Opera House in 100 days in 1879. The materials that were needed for the buildinling were not found inside Leadville so they were brought by wagon. This building has 3 stories. The first was had a couple of shops, the second has an amazing theater, and the third had a skywalk to the Hotel that sat to the south of the Opera House.

As you walk in the front doors, there is a staircase that leads to the theater and to the rooms up on the third floor. To the right the stairs is the ticket booth. The Tabor Opera House hosted many amazing acts throughout its heyday, including Oscar Wilde, Buffalo Bill, Anna Held, and Harry Houdini to name a few.

Did you know that the Columbine was chosen as the state flower of Colorado by school children in 1891? This flower is a favorite of butterflies and hummingbirds. It is also believed the Native Americans used this flower in a tea to treat different ailments. The flowers in this photo are ones that I planted in my front flower bed a couple of years ago.

If you have a great photo of some columbines throughout Colorado, I would love to see them!
