Ask to open the engine hatch. If the answer is anything other than yes, you've already learned what you needed to know.
When I step aboard a boat I'm evaluating for an owner, the engine room tells me more in two minutes than the rest of the boat tells me in an hour. Not because I expect to find something catastrophic. Because it's the one space nobody stages.
I want a bilge that's clean and dry. I want consistency in how she's been kept. Fresh hose clamps sitting next to corroded ones, or one engine that looks cared for beside one that doesn't, is a story about the last owner's attention, and that story continues after you buy her.
And I'm smelling. Fuel where there shouldn't be fuel ends the conversation for me. Not something to look into later.
The cockpit and the cabin are what a boat gets sold on. The engine room is what she gets owned on.

More than 230 employees at a Cadillac boat manufacturing plant will be affected after parent company Groupe Beneteau announced plans to halt production at the facility and seek a buyer for the operation.

French boat manufacturer Groupe Beneteau announced Monday that production at its Cadillac facility will end in August as the company looks to sell the plant along with its Four Winns, Glastron, and Scarab Jet brands.

The facility is operated by Rec Boat Holdings (RBH), Groupe Beneteau's U.S. subsidiary.

What will this industry look like in 10-15 years when Private Equity inevitably owns most marinas in coastal neighborhoods? I think this is an important question to ask because they are destroying our industry and pricing out bread and butter clients. Eventually the boomers will be too old to boat. People in their 30s cant afford a 3 bedroom 1970s house at $1M. Add AI to the picture and future jobs are disappearing. How will future generations afford boats when slips are $250-350/foot?

Joseph "Joe" LoGiudice, longtime owner and president of Hustler Powerboats of Calverton, NY, passed away on April 14, 2026, at the age of 79 after a brief battle with leukemia diagnosed the previous December.

How much valve lift can I run❓

Most people think lift is limited by the camshaft design alone.
