Hens build ground nests in tall grasses, hayfields, and along wood lines. Untamed foliage hides both the eggs and the mother during the critical spring incubation period.

Mowing fields destroys nests, killing the eggs and the mother. It also eradicates the insects that young poults rely on for protein during their first few weeks.

Wild turkey populations across North America face ongoing challenges; giving them undisturbed ground dramatically increases their chances of survival.

Conservationists advise holding off on mowing and brush-hogging until late summer (typically August or September) when most nesting is complete.

If your community has lawn height restrictions, you can mow a localized area less frequently (e.g., twice a month instead of weekly).
