With the support of the City Council, I, William McIntire, Mayor of the City of Hagerstown, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as to serve as a reminder of Haiti’s unique history, enduring spirit of its people and richness of culture.
Accepting the proclamation is Pastor Jacques Metayer, Church of the Zarene Haitians, Fifa Chemestal, The Alexis Family, Annette Paul, Simson Paul, Peter Dorce and Bianca Pierre.
Haitian Heritage Month is celebrated annually to recognize and honor the rich culture, history, and contributions of Haitian and Haitian American communities highlighting their impact on society and promoting understanding and awareness.
In recognizing cultural diversity it highlights the unique and valuable contributions of the Haitian community providing a platform for Haitians to connect with their heritage, celebrate their identity, and foster a sense of pride in their cultural roots.
By recognizing the month, it helps educate others about the history, culture and traditions of Haiti as well as acknowledge the resilience of the Haitian people particularly in the face of historical challenges and ongoing struggles in Haiti.
In addition to the month-long observance, Haitian Flag Day, celebrated May 18th, commemorates the founding of the Haitian flag offering a broader opportunity to explore Haitian culture and history.
