Long before brooms became tied to stories of witches flying through the night, they were considered symbols of protection, cleansing, and sacred care within the home.

In many old folk traditions, brooms were placed near doorways to guard the threshold — the space believed to exist between one energy and another.

People once believed that sweeping was more than ordinary cleaning. It was a spiritual act.

A way of clearing stagnant energy, preparing a room for ritual, or restoring peace after illness, conflict, or grief.

In parts of Europe and early folk magic traditions, handmade brooms were even used in blessings, seasonal rites, and handfasting ceremonies.

The broom became sacred not because it was rare… But because it was used with intention.

And maybe that is why old brooms still carry a strange feeling when we see them resting beside a doorway.

As though generations of hands once used them to protect the peace within a home.

Tomorrow’s New Moon in Ta**us arrives after an incredibly potent build-up of transits concentrated in the 3rd Decan of Ta**us, a Saturn ruled portion of the sign associated with patience, cultivation, maturity, endurance & the slow process of building something meaningful over time.

This entire week has carried a noticeable tonal shift. Mercury moved through a Cazimi with the Sun, bringing moments of clarity, insight, realization, important conversations & mental reorganization. Ceres has also been woven into this lunation, emphasizing themes of nourishment, care, grief, motherhood, sustenance, the body & our relationship with what truly feeds us emotionally, physically & spiritually. All of that energy now folds directly into this New Moon.

After months of collective fire, acceleration, uncertainty & nervous system overload, this Ta**us lunation feels like an invitation to return to the ground again. To slow down enough to hear ourselves think. To reconnect with the body, the breath, our values, our resources & the parts of life that are actually sustainable long term.

Ta**us reminds us that growth is not always dramatic or immediate. Sometimes transformation happens quietly through consistency, through tending, through what we devote ourselves to day after day. There is something deeply Saturnian woven into this New Moon despite Ta**us being ruled by Venus. The wisdom here is about understanding that beautiful things take time to grow & that strong foundations are rarely built overnight.

And because this lunation is occurring in a Venus ruled earth sign while Venus herself continues moving through Gemini in mutual reception with Mercury, there is also an important exchange happening between thought & embodiment, between ideas & tangible reality. This energy asks what we are truly ready to build now, not just imagine.

The seeds planted under Ta**us Moons often emerge slowly, but they tend to endure. This is not fleeting energy. It is steady, fertile, sustaining energy that asks us to cultivate a life that not only appears beautiful from the outside, but actually feels nourishing to live inside of.

𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

Handfasting during Beltane is rooted in old Celtic seasonal traditions tied to fertility, passion, union, and the turning of the earth toward summer. Beltane itself was traditionally celebrated around May 1st, when fires were lit across parts of Ireland and Scotland to welcome abundance, protection, and new life. Because the season carried strong associations with partnership and fertility, it became closely connected to bonding rites between lovers.

A handfasting is a ceremonial binding of hands using cords or ribbons while vows are spoken. The tied hands symbolize two lives being joined together. Some couples treat it as a spiritual marriage, while others use it as a vow renewal or a commitment ceremony outside traditional religious structures.

Historically, there are stories of “trial marriages” lasting a year and a day, though historians debate how widespread that practice truly was. Modern pagan and witchcraft communities often blend reconstructed folklore with personal symbolism, creating ceremonies that feel intimate and meaningful to the couple involved.

Common elements often included in a Beltane handfasting are braided ribbons or cords wrapped around the couple’s hands, flower crowns made of hawthorn, ivy, roses, or wildflowers, and oaths spoken beneath moonlight, beneath old oak trees, or at sunrise. Some couples jump over a fire or candle flame together as a blessing for purification and protection moving into their new life together. Others leave offerings for ancestors or land spirits, while music, drums, dancing, and even a nearby Maypole become part of the celebration itself.

Many people associate Beltane unions with the energy of sacred partnership, sensuality, growth, and mutual devotion. In some modern traditions, couples may invoke deities connected to love and fertility such as Freya, or honor figures tied to Green Man folklore associated with spring and the untamed spirit of the earth.

There is also something deeply symbolic about choosing Beltane for a union. The land itself is changing at that time. Trees leaf out fully, flowers begin opening across fields and forests, and the air carries the warmth of the coming summer after the long stretch of winter. A handfasting held during Beltane often reflects the idea of building something alive together, something meant to deepen and grow through every season that follows.
