Heads up for anyone flying interisland. Starting October 3, Alaska Airlines is introducing daily Boeing 737-800 service on select Honolulu to Maui (OGG) flights, supplementing Hawaiian Airlines capacity on one of the busiest routes in Hawaii. The 717 is not going anywhere yet. Hawaiian’s 717 fleet continues serving all neighbor island markets with around 140 daily flights. You will be able to see clearly on the Alaska and Hawaiian app whether your specific flight is on a 737 or 717 when you book.

📋NEW CHECK IN RULES:

1. Here is what changes for EVERYONE flying neighbor island starting October 3, no matter which aircraft you are on. You must check in and drop your bags at least 50 minutes before departure.

2. International departures from Honolulu are moving from Terminal 1 Lobby 3 to the adjacent Terminal 2 Lobby 4.

And looking ahead, in 2028 Hawaiian plans to retire the 717 fleet entirely and transition to Hawaiian Airlines branded 737s featuring premium interiors and free Starlink WiFi on all neighbor island routes.

Delta planned to launch Boston to Honolulu all winter starting December 19. Now the schedule ends January 3. Two weeks and done before a single flight takes off.

To be fair, this is one of the hardest routes in aviation to make work. Delta left once before. Now they are pulling back again.
