It is 1945 in the state of New Jersey. While her husband is away fighting in a war, a woman and her two children become desperate for help when all of the previous employed servants mysteriously disappear. Almost immediately after putting an ad in the paper, three new servants appear at the door of the estate, and are informed of the great responsibility they must take in caring for the home, because both children are extremely allergic to sunlight. Frustration begins to brew when both children claim they are hearing voices and seeing apparitions, but the mother dismisses the idea of ghosts haunting the house, until she begins to experience unexplained activity. After participating in a seance with "the others", the plot thickens and the children discover they were recently murdered by their mother who then committed su***de, and the voices and apparitions are the living who now occupy the estate.

In a beautiful Vermont lake house, the wife of a scientist becomes increasingly frightened when she hears voices and experiences what she believes to be hauntings at their residence. Seeing the face of a woman appear in their house and in the water of the lake, the idea of a ghost is dismissed by her husband who believes she may be delusional, and he encourages her to see a therapist. This Vermont woman speculates the hauntings are related to the couple that lives next door, after she witnesses them arguing, and as the wife mysteriously disappears.
