Our Country's 250th Anniversary!

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence would be signed by 56 brave representatives from the colonies. Seven of the representatives, were from the state of Virginia. Keep in mind, all these men were putting their lives and property on the line for our country’s freedom.

Signers from Virginia were:

Carter Braxton - helped finance the Revolution with his own money

Benjamin Harrison - became the 5th Governor of Virginia

Thomas Jefferson - Chief Composer of the Declaration of Independence

Francis Lightfoot Lee - Became a Senator of Virginia

Richard Henry Lee - Served as a Virginia Senator

Thomas Nelson Jr. - helped fund the Revolution and became Governor of Virginia

George Wythe - Wythe County and Wytheville were named for George Wythe

On July 2, 1776, Congress passed the resolution calling for independence.
The formal declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776.

On July the 8th, 1776, the first public reading of the Declaration was in Philadelphia.

On August 2, 1776, delegates would sign the parchment copy of the Declaration.

The handwriting of the document probably belongs to Timothy Matlack, of Philadelphia.

One of Benjamin Franklin’s quotes was, “We must all hang together or assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

Our Country’s 250th Anniversary

As we approach the 250th Anniversary of our Independence, we at the Blue Ridge Plateau Regional Visitors Center, want to celebrate this event by posting a few facts about the Revolution and our country’s hard struggle for independence. Keep an eye out, as we will have a series of historic facts each week. We are located at 239 Farmers Market Drive, Hillsville, VA. On 1-77 take exit 14 and follow the Visitors Center signs.

By the mid-1700’s there were 13 British colonies in America.

Great Britain had the most powerful military in the world by 1750.

The American Revolution began when the British Parliament (Government) and King George III began taxation without representation of the colonies.

By 1775, armed conflict, between the British Army and the Colonial Militia and Minutemen, had broken out at the battles of Lexington and Concord.

The 2nd Continental Congress convened on June 15, 1775. Nominated by John Adams, George Washington was unanimously selected to unite the colonies and become Commander-In-Chief, of the New Continental Army. He was voted in and formally accepted on June 16, 1775, and commissioned on June 19, 1775. Since Washington was a Virginian, he helped bridge the gap between the Southern Colonies militia and New England’s localized militia.

We're thrilled to hear that a new operator will reopen Mabry Mill Restaurant next year! The Blue Ridge Parkway announced yesterday that it has selected MM176, LLC for a 10-year concessions contract to provide food, beverage and retail services in the restaurant and gift shop adjacent to the historic Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The new operator is planning interior renovations in 2026 and is planning to open its food and retail services to the public in spring 2027. The Parkway awarded the new concessions contract through a competitive selection process.

“We are excited to see food service return to this historic Parkway destination and look forward to working with the new operator over the next decade at Mabry Mill.” said Tracy Swartout, Blue Ridge Parkway Superintendent. “The new operator’s upcoming investment at the site builds on other recent investments such as the rehabilitation of Matthews Cabin and a new roof and wheel on the Mill Building. As the new operator prepares for renovations, there is still much to enjoy and do at Mabry Mill and in nearby communities, such as Meadows of Dan and Floyd, where a wide variety of food services are available.”

During the 2026 visitor season, NPS staff and volunteers at Mabry Mill will regularly host educational programs, cultural demonstrations such as blacksmithing, music events and walking tours. Beginning June 7, the Blue Ridge Music Center will host Milepost Music concerts for the first and third Sundays throughout the summer. Food truck vendor opportunities are also available for the upcoming visitor season. Interested parties should contact [email protected] for more information.
