“Oh how we love to vilify our opponents - from both sides. How easy to assume that those on “our” side are right and wise and good; how those on “their side are treacherous and foolish and deceptive. I have found right and good and wisdom on both sides. I have found foolishness and treachery and deception on both sides. I have experienced how good intentions can be warped into poor choices no matter what the side.

…We all long for a story that shows that “our” side is right and good, and “their” side is wrong, on both sides of the fence. And even more shocking - we have far more in common with the “other” side that we might imagine.

I was loved from one side onto the other. My hope is that many more thousands will be loved into the truth as well. Maybe you will be the one loving someone on the other side of the fence.” A. Johnson

How we lead matters. Do you drive others with fear? Or fuel them by modeling the courageous culture you speak of?

Fear-Based Leadership Is Bad Business. Try These 4 Steps Instead By Bill Treasurer | May 2, 2019 As a leader, you may be tempted to stoke people’s fear when they aren’t getting things done. Maybe this was the approach your bosses used on you. But if you aim to build people’s courage—to rise ...

I love this article’s emphasis of finding what “they” are good at. Every leader that takes the time to match the skills and interests of their employees with the job, has a more engaged employee and creates more powerful results. People with special needs are not the exception to that.

I also appreciate the emphasis on repetitive tasks and the gift of hiring those whose brains are naturally wired to enjoy the repetition.

Being able to match people with a specific job and with the teams they will serve on is a skill that helps to create a high performing organization.

If you need help developing that skill, give me a call.

Thrilled to introduce the new logo for CONVERSATION Safaris.

It was created by my dear friend, Jennifer Perregrino and voted on by men and women on both sides of the pond, that are active participants and supporters of these workshops.

This is what they said about how the logo relates to their experiences at a CONVERSATION Safari:

There are those that are bold and roar loudly and those that are quiet and timid…

In spite of differences, ALL coming together to be HEARD
• Facing bias and mining for truth
• Minimizing pride and growing humility
In a circle that feels safe, fuels curiosity, is fun and overcomes barriers.
Where trust is built, and hope is fueled.

(The purpose of our freedom of speech, the press, and religion is to have the ability to seek and find the truth TOGETHER. ...If we really know the truth about any topic, we have absolutely no reason to fear what someone else believes. And if we don't really know the truth - we can't solve any of the issues we share.)

Don't know what a CONVERSATION Safari is? This is a short video to help you learn more.

“. ...It’s given me a high degree of confidence that I know where they don't come from and they don't come from out of my own head. Uh, ideas come from interactions with the world, mostly through interactions with other people, to be really honest with you and the world that they live in a, and so if you're not having those interactions, if you're not putting yourself in the place to be inspired by how other people exist and the things that they do and the things that they're excited by, you won't have new ideas.”

IDEO's CEO explains where his best ideas come from, and how design helps shape them. The ability to recognize and develop good ideas is often the superpower that differentiates the merely employed from the uber successful at work.

You really can learn a great deal about a candidate in an interview.

At times I've been sure I was going to hire someone, but was convinced that the candidate would be a horrible choice for the team.

Other times I was really unsure about applicants and their interview convinced me that although they were diamonds in the rough they were the best choice for both the team and the position.

How do you leverage an interview to find the best person for both the team and the position?

About this same time last year I hosted a workshop about FREEDOM. Attendees were descendants/relatives of:
1. Immigrants.
2. People who were ripped from their nation and families, and enslaved.
3. People who had homes and livelihoods ripped from them and walked the trail of tears.

All dreaming of freedom.

Some attendees were also descendants of those that risked everything to to free others through the Underground Railroad, and from concentration camps.

That experience makes this video even more powerful!

Can you imagine learning more about those in your family that dared to dream?
And meeting descendants of those that played a critical part in your freedom story?

Love this! Which one sounds more like you?

:As a young introvert, it flabbergasted David when he first learned that many people talk to figure out what they think. In a leadership training class one time he asked the facilitator, “You mean extroverts say things they don’t mean?”

Early in her career, Karin, a high-energy extrovert had a leadership mentor explain that her enthusiasm for her own ideas sometimes made teammates reluctant to speak up and share their concerns. She had to learn to slow down and ask strategic questions to give people time to process and catch up with her thinking."

Your success as a leader depends on your ability to lead different and diverse people – to bring all these differences together to achieve results.
