Twice Tested, Still Standing
They told me the first time
with words that echoed louder than thunder,
Breast cancer.
A diagnosis that split my life
into a before and an after.
Before fear moved into my chest.
Before sleepless nights became familiar.
Before I learned how much courage
a single woman can carry
while everyone else sees only a smile.
I stood before the mirror,
saying goodbye to a part of myself,
not because I wanted to,
but because survival demanded it.
A mastectomy.
A scar stretched across my body,
but the deeper wound lived inside,
where questions gathered.
Will I still be me?
Will I still feel beautiful?
Will I ever stop being afraid?
Yet somehow,
through tears that stained my pillows
and prayers whispered in the dark,
I survived.
I thought the storm had passed.
I thought healing would be simple.
I thought I could finally breathe.
Then cancer came again.
Not knocking.
Not asking permission.
Endometrial cancer.
Another battle.
Another operating room.
Another piece of me surrendered
to stay alive.
A total hysterectomy.
The loss was different this time.
Not visible to everyone,
but heavy all the same.
