On this day in history, April 28, 1930, something incredible happened right here in Independence…

The very first night game in Organized Baseball was played under the lights at Shulthis Stadium!

That night, the Independence Producers took the field against the Muskogee Chiefs, forever changing the game we love. What started as an experiment lit the way (literally!) for modern baseball, making night games a staple across ballparks everywhere.

From a small town in southeast Kansas to stadiums across the country, Independence made history that still shines bright today.

⚾ Here’s to the moment that turned the lights on for baseball, and put Independence on the map!

❤️One more reason to love Independence ❤️

Every April, something special happens here.
Our community comes together to celebrate kindness.

Big acts, small gestures, quiet moments and loud moments that make a difference. Independence shows up. Neighbors give back. Strangers pay it forward. Smiles are shared, hands are extended, and love is felt in every corner of our community.

It’s more than a day. It’s who we are.

Independence isn’t just a great place to visit, it’s a place to put down roots, to belong, and to be part of something bigger.

Because here in Independence, we care. 💙
