A few months ago, my husband (and our daughter) attended Ford’s off-roading school for new Bronco owners. Customers who have a qualifying 2022 or newer Bronco are eligible to attend Bronco Off-Roadeo to learn the trucks’ capabilities. This credit is available to the vehicle owner basically by the end of the calendar year which follows the Bronco’s model year.

A Bronco or Bronco Sport is provided for the all-day excursion which is led by an expert trail guide. In addition, two delicious meals are included!

While staying at Custer State Park, we took a day trip to Badlands National Park (after a stop at Wall Drug and touring the Minuteman Missile Ntl. Historic Site Launch Facility Delta 01).

Here is what we did:
• Drove into park from NE entrance just SE of Minuteman
• Stopped at Big Badlands Overlook for a few WOW moments then headed to the Visitor Center.
• Watched the 20-minute park film and browsed exhibits on the park’s formation and wildlife, which includes prairie dogs, bison, antelope and the rare black-footed ferret.
• Ate White River Indian Tacos at the Cedar Pass Lodge.
• Door and Window Trails – boardwalk trails with seemingly giant sandcastles
• Drove Badlands Loop Road (Hwy. 240), stopped at overlooks, took short hikes
• Pinnacles Overlook – sunset views
• Safe Creek Road – lots of bison upon exiting

Why is it called Badlands? French trappers in the mid-1700s, frustrated by the land’s sharp peaks and climbing rock, regarded the area as les Mauvaises terres (bad lands). The Lakots also began calling this place Mako sica (land band).

For this trip, we flew into Rapid City and stayed the week at a lodge in Custer State Park. We visited Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Minuteman Site, Badlands NP, Black Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, Wind Cave NP, Bear Country, Spearfish Canyon, and Devil’s Tower. Epic family trip.

If you’re headed to Glacier National Park this summer, consider borrowing what you need from the Sharing Shack! Simple concept: get what you need on your way into the park and return what others can use on your way out. Saves money, reduces waste, gives back to the outdoor community.

What you might find there - bear spray, hiking shoes and poles, sleeping bags, pillows, non-perishable food, maps, toiletries, chairs, pans, etc.

The (green) shack has moved to a location as of May 19, 2025: 3130 Hwy. 206, Columbia Falls, MT. Daylight hours only. Find more information by following “Sharing Shack GNP” on Facebook. This is where fellow travelers post selfies and what they found when they visited.

The shack was started summer 2021 to honor Mia Totten who lost a battle with lung cancer. She served others, was joyful, loved GNP, and could often be found kayaking on Lake McDonald.

After our 7.5 hour Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise, we stopped for a bite to eat in Seward and looked over to find some sea otters!

Some things about sea otters and this amazing day cruise through the National Park:

🤝Sea otters hold hands when they sleep so they don’t float away from each other.
🛶A group of sea otters is called a raft.
🦦Sea otters have the thickest fur of any animal - up to 1 million follicles per square inch. They’re suited for Alaska!
🐳Wildlife is abundant on this cruise likely including orca and humpback whales, sea lions, harbor seals, puffins, eagles, and more.
🧊The cruise visits two active tidewater glaciers: Holgate and Aialik.
🗓️ 2025 dates for this cruise are May 23-September 14 and tickets can be booked online in advance.
🤢If you’re prone to motion sickness definitely prepare before boarding. I waited too long and spent a majority of the cruise not feeling well.
