Yellowstone is a magical place in the winter but can be brutal for the wildlife trying to survive the freezing temperatures. These images convey the cold, harsh environment - the first image was made at Mammoth Terrace in -24 degrees! Despite the bitter cold, my performed flawlessly!

Taken in June 2024 this was the last time I saw #399. I have been following and photographing her since 2010 and the Tetons will not be the same without her presence. She was “only” a bear. But to those of us whom she inspired to love and to care for our wild places so that she and other grizzlies could continue to survive and to thrive, she meant so much. I did not grow up with any particular love for or connection to the wild. But the Tetons and bear #399 awoke in me a latent feeling that changed the trajectory of my life. Rest in peace Mama bear. As I review the thousands of images I took of you and your cubs over the years, each and every encounter brings back such special memories. I am indebted to you.
