One of my favorite little details about traveling in Spain and Portugal is something most people walk right over… literally.

Look down.

The sidewalks and streets are works of art. Intricate cobblestone patterns wind through the cities like giant mosaics. In Portugal, especially in places like Lisbon and Porto, the black and white stone designs form waves, ships, and beautiful geometric patterns that feel like an open-air gallery beneath your feet.

Spain has its own charm too — historic streets and plazas where every stone feels like it has a story.

It’s one of those unexpected travel moments. You arrive for the architecture, the food, and the history… and then you realize the art is everywhere — even on the ground.

One of my favorite little discoveries walking through Granada was this wall titled “The Dog’s Prayer.” 🐶

It’s a heartfelt prayer written from a dog’s perspective asking that his owner be as loyal and loving as he is… and it ends with a very Spanish sense of humor:

“…and pick up my droppings in the street.”

Moments like this are why wandering through Spanish cities is so fun—you never know what charming surprise you’ll find around the next corner.
