BREAKING: Texas Republicans unveil their new gerrymandered Congressional map to the horror of Black and Latino voters — creating five new red districts to keep MAGA control over a state that's trending purple.
We need to be shouting this outrage from the rooftops...
The Texas Legislature finally released its controversial plans to expand Republican control after Donald Trump reached out and directed them to find him new districts to help him hold control of the U.S. House in the 2026 elections. He is terrified of a blue wave.
The areas most heavily affected will be Houston, Dallas, Austin, and South Texas. Districts that are held by Democrats are being dramatically reshaped so that the demographics are more likely to vote for Republican candidates. In the process, Black and Latino Texans will have their votes diluted — a profound violation of their franchise at at time when the MAGA movement is increasingly embracing White nationalist policies.
Millions of Texans will end up with new congressional representatives, proving once again that Republicans do not care about democracy. They only care about their own political power.
Democratic Representatives Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez represent districts with large Latino populations but under this new map their districts would skew redder. At the same time, some blue districts will become even bluer. By packing Democratic voters into the same district, Republicans limit the number of seats they'll end up with in the House.
Democratic Representative Greg Casar and Lloyd Doggett would see their congressional districts merged into one. Casar slammed the proposal as "illegal voter suppression of Black and Latino Central Texans."
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has attacked the plan as an "aggressive and egregious gerrymander" designed to rig the election and "disenfranchise millions of people in Texas.
“Trump and Abbott are scheming to rig next year's Congressional elections in Texas through a convoluted and shameless mid-decade redistricting plan. Let's call this what it is: a brazen, racist, power grab,” Representative Sylvia Garcia from Houston said,
Currently, Republicans hold 25 of 38 congressional districts in the state. If these maps take effect, that number could ballon to 30. Politico reports that the Republican Party's ability to seize these newly redrawn districts will depend on gaining support amongst Hispanic voters. There was a shift towards Trump from that demographic during the 2024 election, but hopefully his disastrous performance will send them running from MAGA.
The worst part is that all of this anti-democratic gerrymandering is being done in service of the worst president in American history. Trump knows that if Democrats seize control of the House we'll be able to stop his agenda dead in its tracks, issue subpoenas, and launch investigations into his flagrant corruption and Jeffrey Epstein scandal. He's sweating bullets.
