Join us for an awesome citizen science event this coming Saturday, September 14th!

Help us catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies! Why? Tagging monarch butterflies helps scientists track the spectacular fall migration of monarch butterflies. Data is reported to Monarch Watch, a research based program at the University of Kansas, to help in conservation efforts.

Bring the whole family for this free public event! Meet us at the refuge headquarters building at 8:30 AM for an introduction to the program. Afterward, we will caravan out to the designated location on the refuge where we will be catching butterflies. That's right, running around with butterfly nets and all!

Please wear close-toed shoes and long pants. We recommend bringing plenty of drinking water, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, and any other necessities to keep you comfortable for a few hours outdoors. Tagging should be complete no later than 12 o'clock noon.

If you are planning on attending, PLEASE continue to monitor this post for updates, changes, or cancellations due weather or a decrease in monarch numbers which could result in rescheduling to another Saturday in September.

🏃‍♂️ Walk, roll or paddle! Pick your favorite way to enjoy nature and take part in an event that supports your local national wildlife refuge. October 12-19, join in the annual Walk for the Wild 5k event to support national wildlife refuges and America's Wildlife Refuges during National Wildlife Refuge Week!

Every step you take helps the National Wildlife Refuge System connect wildlife and the community. With your help, we can make a significant impact for the planet right at home. National wildlife refuges conserve habitat for endangered species, keep carbon out of the atmosphere, and are places to get outside and enjoy nature!

Each event will be different from refuge to refuge but the goal is the same: care for nature and wildlife.

🔗 Go to the link in our bio to find an event near you or take part from home.

Let’s walk together for a brighter future for wildlife. See you outside! 🌍💚

The Northern shoveler’s bill is truly... groundbreaking. 😉

This duck uses its shovel-like bill to scoop food from wetlands. As it dabbles in the water, the Northern shoveler’s bill has comb-like features that act as filters to trap things like small crustaceans and seeds.
