Scenes on Duval Street before the Just A Few Friends Key West Second Line parade yesterday.

Two pugs in a stroller with disco balls, flamingo garland, three leis and a tiny top hat. Better outfit than anybody else I photographed all weekend.

A guy in a white dinner jacket and cowboy hat pedaling a trike with a full PA bolted to the back. In flip flops.

Nobody thought any of it was unusual. That's Key West.

Labor Day morning, sunrise, outside Shrimp Boat Sound.

Every inch of this building is covered in stickers people put there. Thousands of them. Somebody stood right here, peeled the back off, pressed it onto the wall, and walked away.

Every one of those is a person who came a long way to stand at a shed on a dock, because of what came out of it.

Kayaks tied up out front. Sun coming up behind the palms. Whole seaport still asleep after four days of it.

It isn't over yet. There's more today. But this morning it's quiet enough to feel the shape of the whole weekend, and what it was actually for.

Thousands of stories on this wall. All the same story, really.

Five o'clock is 30 minutes out.

Already shoulder to shoulder. Hawaiian shirts, leis, umbrellas, one guy in full pirate.

This is the part where you realize how many people this actually meant something to.

Walks down to Truman Waterfront, then Party in the Park 6 to 10. Free.

If you're near Duval, come get in it. A second line isn't something you watch.

March 9, 1978. Orpheum Theatre, Boston.

Chris Lauber was in the first four rows with nineteen friends in custom printed yellow A1A shirts. Frame zero on the contact sheet, the first shot he took that night.

He spent twenty years as a pro hoping one of his Buffett photos would run somewhere. Never happened. Then in 2021 somebody found his old shots on Facebook and asked to use one.

It ended up on a book cover in 2025. Forty seven years between the shutter and the thing he wanted.

His work is up all weekend outside the Chart Room as part of the Just A Few Friends Key West Labor Day weekend events.

Opal Key last night, right after the storm passed.

Twenty minutes earlier this was all rain. Then it moved out over the water and left the sky doing that purple and orange thing it only does after a soaking.

Everybody's afraid of rain in the forecast down here. This is what's on the other side of it.
