I took a short break at the farm today, not to smell the proverbial roses, but to enjoy the milkweed in bloom for its fragrance, honey bees and butterflies! The milkweed grows in my pollinator area. Milkweed is vitally important for monarch butterflies as they lay their eggs on the milkweed plant and the monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweed. In addition to the butterflies, there were literally hundreds of honey bees all around me with the milkweed blooms filled with bees. A few hummingbirds popped in and out as they gathered nectar from the milkweed. Maybe the best part of milkweed for me is it's wonderful fragrance!

The second phase of this year's sunflower planting is completed. The sunflowers from the first phase are more than 2 ft tall now. Excessive rain in early June delayed our first planting, but I'm confident they'll be just as beautiful as ever when they reach maturity. I have added pictures from last year when the sunflowers matured. The bees, birds, and I all love the sunflowers!

I love seeing eagles at the Eagle Rock Farm! Our tradition is to stake deer carcass remains with a trail camera nearby so that we can observe the eagles as well as hawks, crows, coyotes, bobcats, and opossums feeding on the carcass remains. The eagles are prospering in the area with several generations feeding on the carcasses each year. The deer were legally harvested on the farm and butchered during season.
