Here’s something most travelers don’t find out until they’re already freezing on a city street:

In some cities, wind matters more than the temperature.

I learned this over years of traveling — you can dress for cold and still be miserable if you don’t dress for wind.

Cities with tall buildings and open streets create natural wind tunnels that cut straight through clothing. That’s why a 45° day in certain cities can feel far colder than a 30° day somewhere else.

This is especially true in cities like:

New York City
Chicago
San Francisco
Boston
Toronto

These cities all have strong coastal or urban wind patterns that change how cold you actually feel when you’re walking all day.

This is something I always help my clients think about ahead of time, because the right packing choices completely change the experience.

On this Thanksgiving Day, I’m taking a moment to reflect on how quickly Getaway Girl Destinations has grown — and how grateful I am for every person who has trusted me with their travel plans. I started this business simply because I love travel. I never expected it to take off the way it has, but in just two and a half months I’ve already served more than 25 clients, and this week I’m working on six different family itineraries.

What I’ve loved most is being back in a role centered around people. True customer service feels rare these days, and it means a lot to be able to take stress off my clients and make the planning process feel easy and enjoyable. From destination weddings with more than 100 guests, to all-inclusive escapes across the Caribbean, Mexico, and Costa Rica, to a cross-country road trip from Virginia to Montana, to a couple of girlfriend cruise getaways — every trip reminds me how personal and meaningful travel is. That’s no small thing. So as we pack our bags and head to the skies, let’s do what we do best: travel smart, stay kind, and keep it moving with grace.

🕐 Arrive Early—Yes, Even Earlier Than Usual

Security lines may be longer due to staffing shortages. Plan to arrive at least 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours for international. If you’re flying during peak hours, add even more buffer.

📱 Monitor Your Flight Like a Hawk

Download your airline’s app and turn on notifications. Flight delays and gate changes are more common right now, and real-time updates are your best friend.

🔄 Stay Flexible

Avoid tight connections or back-to-back commitments. Travel during off-peak days (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays) and hours (late morning to early afternoon) for a smoother experience.
