Hello from Kentucky lake! It has been a minute since my last report. For those that follow my guide service, you may have noticed there hasn’t been but one post this spring. There is an unfortunate reason for that. Nagging motor issues have had me running back and forth to the mechanic instead of to the water to fish. These problems have kept me off the water since April. This, as you can imagine, has been hard on the pocketbook, as well as my sanity. It takes time and money to be a fishing guide, and if I am not on the water, I am not making any money. Since I don’t have any sponsors, and operate out of my wallet, I have been forced to
make a tough decision.
The time has come to shut down the guide business for a while. This decision has not been made lightly, as it has always been a dream of mine to be a fishing guide since I was a kid. Like I have said before, my wife allows me to live a dream. However, I can’t put all the pressure on her to make ends meet. She deserves more than that. Therefore, I will be returning to the electrical trade to make my living. As much as this has been a step back, I am going to stay positive about it. I hope to use this time as a building block towards the future. With any luck, I will be back to showing people a good time on the water again in the future.
Now, being a fishing guide, as I found out, was the most stressful job I have ever had. Regardless of how many trips I have taken, I still didn’t sleep the night before. I never could figure out how to turn my mind off from playing different scenarios and what if’s in my head. I always wanted to make sure I was ready for anything that could happen. I pride myself on the attention to detail and hard work. I truly believe that this is why we had so many good catches over the years. There was never a day that I didn’t care if my people caught fish. I wanted folks getting off of my boat with a pile of fish to take home. More days than not we got it done and sent folks home with a stack of fillets for the fryer.
When I started this journey in 2012, I was given my first chance by Don Schnuck, and Chris Hicks, of Big Kahunas fishing guide service to help take overflow customers periodically. This allowed me to gain experience, as well as learn what it takes to put people on fish on a daily basis. The more I helped, the more I learned, and the more fun I had. With having a flexible job in the trades, I found myself on the water more and more until I was doing more fishing than electrical work.
Lucky Lady Guide Service opened in the spring of 2018 to mixed reviews. While I have the experience and the maritime credentials, there were still doubters as to my legitimacy. I am sure folks had a hard time believing that a virtual unknown could come in and have the skill set to catch enough fish to be successful. Well, I don’t blame them for holding this opinion, I would hope by now I have changed some peoples minds. Regardless of what people think, I have always been a look you in the eye, and shake your hand kind of guy. I never lied to
anyone about the fishing out of my boat nor did I ever say anything behind someone’s back that I wouldn’t say to their face. I also never candy, coated anything and wanted people to know the facts before they got on my boat. I knew when I started in 2018, it was arguably one of the worst down cycles in the history of the lakes on the north end. I knew in order to make it, I would have to work hard to find enough fish to satisfy folks, but I also knew I couldn’t wait for the challenge.
From 2018 to 2022, I have managed to see a little bit of everything. From letting childhood idol, Jimmy Houston fish thru, to coyotes, swimming across the lake, to seeing a Sasquatch catch a ride on a sailboat. (Those folks on that boat were pretty festive that day!) I have also managed to blow up my motor, break my trolling motor, have countless rods broken by folks, I have even pulled some hooks out of some sensitive areas! With the exception of the blow motor, I wouldn’t trade any of those experiences for anything. Everything I learned made me better. Although some lessons hurt more than others.
Like I said earlier, when I opened my business, the fishing was tough on the north end. The Asian carp explosion, as well as record rainfall, took its toll, and it has taken a few years and good spawns to start showing signs of life again. Even though I am not guiding, I hope the positive trend continues so these lakes can get back to their former glory.
While the fishing has been tough on the north end, it didn’t seem to diminish as much on the south end of the lake. I am often asked why this is, and I have some theories, but no facts or proof, so I will not share them here. Now some folks may say I’m just bellyaching or trying to make up for my inability. These folks are entitled to their opinion, but if you aren’t blind, it’s plain to see. The difference is night and day. If you don’t believe me, go Crappie fish the Tennessee side of the lake and then come back and Crappie fish, north of johnathan Creek. You can go see for yourself the difference as well on social media. While guides up north may be catching hundreds of Crappie in the spring, I know of one guide who has caught over 3000 Crappie down south this year alone. You can see the daily pics of the piles on his page. It is truly impressive. I also know he isn’t the only guide doing it. If that kind of Crappie fishing was to be had up north, these resorts wouldn’t struggle as much in March and April. I am also sure there would be more pressure from locals, who know how to catch fish, yet the bays are basically empty. This has to be hard on local businesses.
With the last five years, being tough for Crappie fishing, which these lakes are famous for, I had to find something to provide tugs on the lines for my customers. I like action, and I want my folks to catch fish. That being said, taking folks Crappie fishing for 2 to 10 bites maybe, wasn’t my idea of fun. I know folks don’t come to the area necessarily to catch yellow bass, however, they don’t come to Crappie fish and not much catch much of anything either. A cooler full of yellow bass, bluegill and maybe a few catfish sure beat a air sandwich at suppertime. It is also easier to pay money to a guide when he sent you home with some fine table fare, instead of excuses as to why you didn’t catch. Where I come from, if you fish with a guide, you should be able to expect some action, not just a boat ride. Now, I’m not saying a whack fest can happen every day, but I feel that most folks feel like they should catch more fish with a guide then they can by themselves. This is what I strive to do, regardless of the species that decided to play the game that day. I have nothing to hide so here are my numbers from 2018 through 2022.
I splashed my boat 665 times to fish. Upon going back and looking at my books, there were 52 days that I had marked as scouting and prospecting days. On those days I did not bring fish home to clean. Those days were spent prospecting new ground, or checking spots for the next days trips. The other 613 days I went out with a vengeance trying to rip lips and fill live wells. Some days were better than others, but the numbers are what they are. When looking at these numbers, please keep in mind that all the fish I caught out of my boat were caught off one rod and reel per person. I do not troll. I pride myself in being able to find the X. I also pride myself on being able to adapt when plan A,B, and C don’t work, instead of beating a dead horse, till the time to take the folks back into the dock. That being said, from the spring of 2018 through the fall of 2022, I CLEANED 17,190 fish for clients and friends who fished with me. Now I know for a fact, this isn’t the most fish caught by a guide. I do, however, feel that it is a respectable amount of catching out of my boat.
It has been an honor and a privilege to take folks out and try to show them a good time. I have gotten to see countless personal bests. I have seen the girls outfish the guys on most occasions, and parents who were showing their kids, the love of fishing and the outdoors. I always love seeing the smiles of folks standing over a cooler full of fish at picture time. However, my favorite thing to see what is the big eyed looks from the kids every time that rod tip would go down. I don’t remember all the names, but I remember the faces. I hope I spurred on their love of fishing after they have fished with me.
Since this is my last report, I would like to say thank you to some folks. First and foremost, I want to thank my wife for allowing me to live a dream. I want to say thank you to Don Schnuck, a.k.a. the Big kahuna. Thank you for the opportunity. I want to say thank you to my old ball coach and fishing partner Chris Hicks. You are one fish catching dude. Thank you for teaching me life lessons on the ballfield, working with me, putting up with my crap, and being one of the best friends a man can have. You truly have no idea of the impact you have made in my life in a positive way. Thank you to Rodney Hairgrove of Hairgrove Guide Service for sending me work, as well as trusting me to help. This guy catches a lot of fish and is a tough act to follow. Thank you to Lynn Lane for working with me and teaching me about catfish. You are the catfish catchingist man I have ever met. Thank you to Richard Bay of Kickin Bass guide service for the work. I want to thank Brad Culp, Big Dave, and all the folks at Sportsmans Bait ,Tackle and Marine repair. My job couldn’t have been done without all of these folks helping me from time to time. Last, but not least, I want to thank the carp fisherman. The job you are doing is vital to the lakes area and tourism. Thank you for all your hard work. I hope everyone has a great rest of their 2023 and I look forward to the time I can get back on the water to chase that dream. Again, thank you and tight lines!

Now come on duck season!

With another gorgeous day on tap, I decided to strictly chase crappie today. It has been a while since I prowled around some of my old crappie haunts. I was pleased to find some fish to take home and caught several short fish as well. Glad to see some signs of improvement. 270-816-3102

Hello from Kentucky lake! With spring around the corner, I thought I would let everyone know what I’ve been up to since my last report. October closed out the fishing season and fishing was nothing short of spectacular. November fou d me working at the electrical trade and getting ready for duck season. I did take a short break to deer hunt, but just could not sit still knowing how much work needed to be done before the duck opener.
Duck season proved to be a memorable one for many reasons. I’ve got to see 41 of the 60 sunrises in the blind. I covered four states and put 10,000 miles on the truck in the process. I started my new lab pup Katie, who had zero retrieves to start the season, end with 27 to hand. However, not all were perfect. She has a ways to go, but they have to start somewhere. I guess I have been spoiled by the way, my trusty sidekick, Lucy, has done it for years. Although I didn’t kill a banded bird this year, I was blessed to get a bucket list pair of black mallards and a pair of ringnecks for the taxidermist! My wife, however, wasn’t that excited to hear about two more pairs of birds to go with the other 12 pairs already on the wall. I have to say I am blessed to have the wife I have. She plays along really well, and allows me to do what I do. However, the closer it gets to the end of duck season, the more she doesn’t really care for tired duck hunters, and wet dogs. She cares even less for the bank account being at Ground Zero, all in the name of killing ducks, and getting the dogs some work. That being said, she put me back to work at the electrical trade the day after season was over. She didn’t even give me a chance to wind down and put everything away before her work request which was more like a command! That’s the sign that she has reached her limit and it’s time to get things cleaned up and put away.
These warm days of late have allowed me to get the boat and tackle ready. It is also giving me a chance to edit the numbers from last year to see how the year stacked up. I manage to have 106 days on the water in 2022 with and without clients. With the exception of a few trips, everyone caught lots of fish and went home with plenty of fish to eat! That much time on the water allowed me to keep up with fish movements. As always, I learned some new things, as well as, learned a bunch of new places to fish. As any fisherman will tell you, you can never have enough places to fish! The time spent putting in the work is worth every minute when you see your people smiling, as they catch fish after fish. Staying on the water is the only way I know to do this.
Stable water conditions and good weather last spring help produce a good spawn. This is a positive sign and early bass tournaments have shown good numbers of fish caught as well as good weights. Myself, along with many others would love to see this lake get back to its former glory. Hopefully, we will have stable water conditions again this year to help produce another good spawn.
I have seen some good pictures of Croppie being caught this winter on the south end of the lake. I will be targeting these fish first to see if I can catch enough for myself and other folks. I have heard of a good report this spring on crappie, with fish being caught in several different age classes on the north end as well. Let’s hope these crappie are as concentrated and ready to, bite like the crappie on the south end of the lake. I expect an improved crappie bite this spring but time will tell. If the crappie don’t want to cooperate, I will not hesitate to pull off and chase yellow bass and bluegill. I like action, I would rather have 50 yellows and bluegills as opposed to just a few Croppie. Catching fish for the fryer is what I am trying to do. I want people to feel tugs and put fish in a box to take home.
I will begin fishing sometime later this month and will hopefully be on the fish by the start of my guide season on April 1. Anyone who is interested in getting on the water can just give me a call or text. Although my guide service is on Facebook, I rarely check Facebook messenger. My personal number for the guide service is on every post I make on Facebook or Instagram. Any other info can be found at luckylady.fishing I have plenty of open days to fill, so give me a call to set up your trip. Anyone who is interested in booking a trip will need a fishing license and whether appropriate clothing. I take care of the bait, tackle, fish, cleaning, and packaging. All you have to do is be ready to fish!
At LLGS, I want everyone to have a great time while in our lakes area. If my guide service can’t provide you with the experience you’re looking for, I will be happy to point you in the direction of other reputable guides who can. I recommend doing your homework and looking at most recent pictures to see what each Guide Service is catching. Guys who are catching fish will be posting pictures regularly. This can help you decide which guide service is right for you.
I would like to take the time to thank those who make my guide service go. First of all, the “lucky lady”, a.k.a. the wife. Without her, I am nothing. I am truly blessed to have her. She allows me to live a dream, and keeps me around even during duck season so I know she loves me! Second, I would like to thank Brad Culp of Sportsmans bait tackle and marine repair. Brad and his folks go above and beyond to keep my guide service on the water. Whether it’s fresh bait, tackle, or motor repairs, he always takes care of me, and gets me back on the water as soon as possible. If you stop in just once, you will see what I mean. I would also like to think all those who have fished with me in the past. I appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you again soon. For anyone who is thinking about a trip, but is unsure, just give me a call. I will be happy to talk with you. I am honest, straightforward, and I will let you know how the fishing is out of my boat, so that you can make an informed decision on what you want to do. Remember, I just want you to have a good time while in our Lakes area. Thanks for your time. Tight lines!

Hello from Kentucky Lake! Today marked the official end to my guide season for the year. Getting in on a last chance trip, Susie and her dad Frank came out to try their luck. Our morning started with a cool boat ride, but we quickly warmed up once we got to our destination. Stop number one turned out to be a good one, as everyone got some tugs and put some fish in the livewell. Stop number two was even better than the first stop. Susie and Frank both laid the wood to them! They were even bringing them 2 at a time on several occasions. After about an hour, they quit biting and we made a move to stop number three. This produced fish as well with more doubles being added to the bounty. It was another spectacular day on the big pond. We ended our 4 hour trip with what I consider another mess of fish. Thank you Susie and Frank for the enjoyable day, y’all were a pleasure to fish with. Thanks go out as well for everyone who fished with me this year. I would also like to thank Chris Hicks, for all the help he gives me throughout the year as well as talking me off the ledge when I ain’t catching good. Thanks to Richard Bay of Kickin Bass guide service for todays referral. Thanks as well to Brad Culp of Sportsmans Bait Tackle and Marine repair who keeps me running and on the water. I look forward to some time off for hunting season before gearing up for next years fishing season. Until I check in again, everyone please stay safe and tight lines! LLGS 270-816-3102

Hello from Kentucky Lake! I got a call from good friend and fellow guide, Chris Hicks about helping him with the Hahn family. With 2 sons they decided to take two separate boats out to make sure no one was crowded and allow us to help these boys catch some fish. I drew Denise and Preston while Matt and son Waylon drew Chris. We took off in hopes of keeping these boys interested while we were out and hopefully get them hooked on fishing before they left. We made our first stop and we’re able to fish close to each other so everyone could talk while they fished. This lasted a little while but the fish decided to break up our party when they quit biting. That called for a move to new water for some more line stretching. Preston did an amazing job of catching fish. He caught fish, after fish, after fish and kept me busy just taking fish off. When he was out of the water, Denise would get a chance to catch her some herself, and caught several that went in the livewell. All in all, we couldn’t have been blessed with a better day. Matt and Denise got their sons out on the water and watched them catch a lot of fish as well as themselves. The memories made today, are the kind that will last a lifetime. Thank you for trusting Chris Hicks and my guide service to take y’all out. It was truly a pleasure. LLGS 270-816-3102

Hello from Kentucky Lake! I am a day late in posting, but I had my good friend Danny Belcher in the boat with me. With a beautiful day in the forecast, we headed out to see what we could find. We shared lots of laughs and caught up on how each one’s family has been doing. We managed to get our line stretched several times and ended with a nice mess of fine eating for Danny to take home to Ms. Bonnie. It’s always a good time when you get the chance to fish with your friends. We will definitely do it again. I am still out on the water if anyone is interested. I will do my best to show you a good time. LLGS 270-816-3102

Hello from Kentucky Lake! I had the chance to take David Courtney and our buddy George “Fuman” Terry today. I have worked around David for years and knew as far as people go, he is as fine as they come. What I haven’t had the chance to do is spend some time with him out in the woods or on the water. That being said, I gave him a call and asked him to come along and to bring Fuman and we would see if we could find anything that would stretch a line. What was ahead of us was nothing short of spectacular, starting with the sunrise. With a cool crisp start, you could sense fall in the air. Leaves were turning and the deer and eagles were out and about. The fish were also in the mood to play. Our first stop got everyone on the same page as to how we were gonna fish today and saw our first several fish go in the livewell. After that, it was on! It was easy to see that if David got a chance to work on them, he was the right man for the job! Fuman, not to be out done, was beating them down as well. It was truly an amazing day on the big pond. Good weather, good friends, and good fishing is a heck of a trifecta, and today we hit it big. Thanks guys for such a great day. It was truly enjoyable having y’all in the boat. Days like today are what memories are made of. On another note, Thank you to all who came to Lynn Lane’s benefit and auction last Saturday. Thank you as well to the local businesses that gave products to be auctioned off. A lot of good was accomplished to help these fine folks. LLGS 270-816-3102
