The Road Most Travelled
It has been brought to our attention that village residents, more specifically the residents on Summit Street, have had enough of the excessive dump truck and semi traffic. Summit street which runs from Lakewood Rod & Gun all the way to the intersection of Big Tree Rd. and Fairmount Ave. has been the primary route of travel for heavy vehicles that include dump trucks and semis. It has been witnessed on multiple occasions, a dump truck from each municipality in the county utilizing Summit. That includes trucks from Findlay Lake, Clymer, Ripley, Fredonia, North Harmony, and even from as far as Westfield. In the span of 20 minutes 18 dump trucks blazed through our once quiet village.
From April-September a number of private companies and county municipalities will roar up and down Summit St. as a means to bypass the traffic lights on Fairmount Ave. While this certainly saves the private companies and county employees time and money, the abuse of the convenience of using the street has worn on its residents. With numerous reports of excessive speeds, aggressive driving, and numerous close calls with runners, cyclists, and children, we believe it necessary to bring attention to this potentially deadly situation. As a tourism page that works to bring visitors from far and wide to experience the beauty and character of our village and support its many small businesses we also believe it a priority to stand with our residents who have chosen to make the Village of Lakewood their home. Please call the county at 716-661-8401 to add your name to the growing list of complaints about the excessive heavy vehicle traffic on Summit St. If you experience or witness aggressive driving from the commercial traffic please call the Lakewood Busti Police Department at 716-763-9563. Ultimately we would like to see the heavy vehicles utilizing a more appropriate roadway to accommodate their demanding needs.
