As your travel advisor: the interior cabin isn't the compromise. Not taking the cruise is.

I've said this to more than one client with a straight face, and I mean it every time. I've booked interior cabins for my own family — more than once, on purpose. Not because we had to settle. Because the balcony on that particular ship wasn't in reach that year, and being on the ship mattered more to me than the view did.

Here's the part nobody tells you: you're not in that cabin. You're at the pool. You're at dinner. You're on the excursion you booked. The room is where you sleep between all the parts you actually came for.

If a balcony you can't quite swing right now is the only thing standing between you and a trip you could take today — that's not a downgrade. That's just knowing what you're there for.

Here’s something worth knowing about Disney cruises: pricing on a brand-new sailing is usually at its best the moment it opens for booking, before cabins start filling in.

September 8 is that day this year. Disney Cruise Line is releasing a full new set of sailings — Fall 2027 and Spring 2028, across nearly every ship they have.

But getting in early is only part of it. My job from there is finding the itinerary, the ship, and the sailing length that actually fits your family — and checking what onboard credit I might have available to put toward it.

I had a client tell me flat out that Disney wasn’t affordable for her family. She’d never actually gotten a real number. Once I put the early pricing, the right itinerary, and available onboard credit together, it turned out to be a very different conversation.

If you’ve made the same assumption, let’s check it against something real before you rule it out.

Not every cruise port is created equal, and that’s the part almost nobody tells you.

Some ports have plenty to do right off the ship. Good shopping, walkable areas, a beach a few minutes away. On those days you can get off, wander, eat something, and have a great day without booking a thing.

Other ports, the best parts are nowhere near the pier. No plan means a few blocks of walking and heading back early wondering what you missed.

So “do we need an excursion” isn’t a yes or no. It depends on which port you’re standing in.

That’s the part I handle. I go through your itinerary port by port and tell you which days need a plan and which ones you can enjoy on your own. For the days that need one, I narrow it to two or three that actually fit your family. Ages, energy level, how much walking anyone will tolerate. Using operators I trust, and where I’ve done it myself, I can tell you exactly what the day felt like.

One thing I’ll push you on: book early. The best operators fill up first, and the leftovers are never the same experience.

Planning your first cruise can feel like a research project with no finish line. Here’s where I’d actually start.

Choose the right ship, not just the itinerary. Two cruises to the same islands can feel completely different depending on the ship — the size, the layout, what’s actually on board. Make sure it’s a ship you’ll be happy on, not just a destination you’re excited about.

Three nights isn’t enough. I learned that one the hard way — you get maybe one real port day and you’re already sailing home. Four nights is a solid place to start if you’re new to this.

Your cabin isn’t one decision, it’s several. Some upgrades change the whole trip. Some don’t do much beyond the photo. Knowing which is which is most of what I do.

And the cruise line matters as much as the ship. A line built for couples and a line built for teenagers can sail the exact same itinerary and feel nothing alike.

None of this has to be something you figure out alone.

Sails out Thursday, back home Monday. Freedom of the Seas leaves Miami on December 17th — two sea days, a stop in Grand Turk, and you’re home the 21st.

CMS winter break starts Monday, December 21st. So your kids only miss two days of school — Thursday and Friday — and you’re walking off the ship the same morning break begins. Home, unpacked, and still ahead of Christmas.

My rule for every family: fly down Wednesday evening and sleep near the port so nobody’s racing to the ship the morning of. You’re still only missing those two school days either way.

Freedom was the ship my husband and I took on our very first cruise. Still my favorite for a quick one.

This is the cruise I’m planning for my own family, as a travel advisor. Here’s exactly why.

Star of the Seas has been on our list since it launched — Icon-class, out of Port Canaveral, the kind of ship my boys would talk about for years. Seven nights to the western Caribbean: Perfect Day at CocoCay, Costa Maya, Roatán, Cozumel.

It’s also the kind of ship that’s easy to admire and put off, because putting a family of four on it usually means either two full-fare cabins or one cabin priced for four adults. Neither of those made sense as our only trip for the year.
