For today’s Saturday Knots, we have the Double Fisherman bend. Way more effective than a “pretty bow” for keeping these completely random strings out of the way.

For today’s Saturday Knots and Rigging, how to lower your 2 year old over your retaining wall. The voodoo is a personal favorite of mine so I was happy to get to set this one up. Can’t overdo time in the harness just yet, but hoping she can do a real rappel with me this summer.

For today’s Saturday Rigging we are covering how to reeve a Figure 8 style device properly. Now, most folks consider the 8 outdated nowadays but you shouldn’t hold that against them. The totem (pictured here) is an incredibly versatile device but even a plain old 8 or Rescue 8 is more capable than you might think. Rig it this way and it doesn’t matter that there’s no keeper like on an ATC - if you drop it accidentally it won’t go anywhere.

One item that always deserves a place on your rack (if not your harness) is a nice HMS carabiner. Most folks use these for their belay or descent control device, but that is just a small portion of its usefulness. Also called a pear carabiner, the letters HMS are an abbreviation for the German word for the Munter Hitch which is what this biner’s shape and size are perfect for. I always carry a couple!
