The United States (US) Government has revised its travel advisory for Jamaica to Level 2, a move that will elicit a large sigh of relief within the tourism industry.

The revised level comes two months after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio committed, during his visit to Jamaica in March, to review the Level 3 travel advisory which, among a number of factors, had been negatively impacting the vibrant but fragile tourism industry.

Southwest Airlines to Introduce Checked Baggage Fees, Ending “Bags Fly Free” Policy

Starting Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Southwest Airlines will officially end its long-standing “Bags Fly Free” policy. Passengers booking flights on or after that date will now be charged $35 for their first checked bag and $45 for the second—marking a major shift for an airline that has built its brand on customer-friendly service.

Travelers who booked their flights before May 28, 2025, will still be allowed to check two bags at no additional cost.

Some customers will continue to enjoy free checked baggage. Those flying on Business Select or Choice Extra fares will retain the two-bag allowance. Additionally, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members will continue to receive two complimentary checked bags. A-List members and holders of a Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card will be entitled to one free checked bag.
