Beit Qnaiouer Follow us as we restore and furnish our 150-year-old stone house in Qnaiouer, a small village that overlooks Wadi Qannoubine in Northern Lebanon.

We would love to meet you and welcome you into our home.

The Cedars beyond Wadi Annoubine are snow-capped and even though Qnaiouer isn't fully immersed in meters of snow, the cold breeze is starting to sweep through the wadi letting us know the real winter is approaching.

And here is the winter snow around Beit Qnaiouer. The house was left standing like that throughout the winter season. This gave us time to reflect, evaluate and plan for the next stages of Beit Qnaiouer.

We wanted to create an arch on the wall with cement which would accentuate the room as well as hold the stone well.

We also had to figure out where the heating would go (chauffage) and so we needed to make sure the foundations and details were sorted before adding the roof of the first floor and constructing the second floor. We had to work fast as winter was kicking in.

In the last picture of this post, you will see how the back of the house looked. As you will notice there were very little windows in the house so very little light could get in. We decided to create doors and windows to get natural light into the house.

We created an arch in the second bedroom on the ground floor. This will serve as a door way to the back of the house.

More arches on the side of the house with the nice view. Underneath this concrete floor was the water reservoir. Above this arch will be a chill out balcony.

Nothing like a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, sitting on the balcony enjoying the sound of nature and watching the sunset...absolute heaven!

We created a two-level platform on this side of the house. We did that because the house is inclined and higher towards the back and if we remove too much ground the house would have less support on the side. Also, these two steps will break the monotony of a large flat area room.

We created thin walls (behind the builder in yellow) because we wanted to add glass slabs between these walls to let more natural light in.

Imagine sitting by the window watching the snow fall...love, love, love!

So the arch on the left side of the house turned out like this. Looking at it now, it looks so simple but each stone needed to be carved, cut, and matched to perfection. Working with these very heavy stones is tiring and the whole process is time-consuming.

Hats off to our magnificent builders!

To get to the extension on the side of the house we needed to create a corridor from the front entrance to this extension, so we constructed this door. On the right of this door (behind the wall) is a small guest bathroom and behind the wall on the left side there is a bedroom.

This extension will have a relaxing chill-out area with a dining room. For there to be a dining area here, it means the kitchen will be close but it won't be here. We will later show you where the kitchen will be.

Oh and one very critical part of this project was when we moved the support of the mountain on the side, the walls were very brittle so guess what happened? Yes, the whole wall fell, which created even more work. The only good thing was that no-one got injured as the wall fell when the builders were standing afar.

I have added more photos to this post so you know exactly which wall I'm talking about. Having the roof fall, however, gave us more flexibility in seeing where we could add/move the windows/doors.

We preserved the stones to reconstruct the wall, which will share with you at a later stage.

All I can say is Allah yaweek (may God give you strength). A saying we commonly say in Lebanon when someone has been working hard.

Can't wait to show you how this wall turned out!

You know the saying bigger is better...well we decided hey since we have the land around the house and we want to welcome friends and family, why not make the house more comfortable. So we decided to make an extension to both sides of the house.

Another reason why we also wanted to extend the house was to let more light in from all sides. Just as a recap, if you look at the next image in this post, it will show you how the house was sort of embedded in or strangled by the mountain.

For the next couple of posts, we will show you how we extended this area.

Now it's time to create a dividing wall between the two bedrooms on the ground floor. It feels so good having so much light and sun enter these rooms. Rooms that were so dark and gloomy now look so bright and airy.

Light shining into the room surely beats any light at the end of the tunnel 💡

Now we go into the house...inside you will notice the wooden roof structure. We kept what could be salvaged and the ones that were too damaged were saved as firewood for the winter 🥶
