You might have noticed an interesting parade down our gravel roads in Western Loudoun today! Our Humane Law Enforcement team got the call that a bison was loose and creating his own version of a farm tour through the neighborhood.

Our HLE officers responded and formulated a plan while our dispatch team worked behind the scenes to identify an owner. Thanks to the Operation: Protect Livestock database and community members calling in, our dispatchers were able to connect with his owner. The HLEOs and owner along with deputies from Loudoun County Sheriff's Office worked to es**rt this wandering friend down the road and safely into a field.

Thank you to all the community members who called - we are happy to share that this bison is safe and out of the road!

Do you have livestock? Sign up for Operation: Protect Livestock to help keep them safe! Operation: Protect Livestock is a free program for livestock and horse owners offered by Loudoun County Animal Services and the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. By registering, owners can be quickly notified if their animals break free from their fenced fields and wander into roadways.

LOUDOUN EQUESTRIANS
It's critical for YOU to fill out this survey. It assists LCEA in representing YOU to the county and state. The last survey had Loudoun and Fauquier counties as the top two equestrian counties in the state. Let's not dissapoint!!!

Your participation is essential to accurately represent Virginia's horse industry. If you own a horse or manage an equestrian business in Virginia, your input is critical for policymakers and funders. Without your input, the industry's economic impact may be underestimated. “I thought we had this settled, and now the planners want to reduce the number of horses that we can have per acre in our suburban community. Are there any standards that we can give them to help us keep what we have?”

This is a question horse owners, boarding facilities, and equestrian organizations continue to ask as communities grow, and land-use pressures increase.

There is rarely a single “correct” horses-per-acre ratio. The number of horses a property can sustain depends on its soils, vegetation, infrastructure, management practices, environmental conditions, and regulatory requirements.

🏇Introduction to Foxhunting for the restarted OTTB 🏇
Part of the OTTB ReStart Clinic Series at Great Meadow

Join us at Great Meadow for an exclusive OTTB Foundational Foxhunting Clinic with Instructor Natalie Wales!

This unique clinic begins with a ""Reverse Tailgate""—bringing participants together before they ride to recreate the informal educational conversations that traditionally happen after a hunt. Riders will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn the customs and culture of foxhunting, and gain confidence before ever putting a foot in the stirrup.

The mounted portion then transitions into the field, where participants experience riding as a group in working hunt territory, practicing the skills and etiquette that prepare both horse and rider for a successful first day with the hunt.

On June 20, the Equine Disease Communications Center (EDCC) announced that a University Clinician and the State Veterinarian confirmed an Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) Neurologic case in Powhatan County, Virginia. The private facility is now under official quarantine.

The mare presented with clinical signs of vestibular disease (affecting balance and spatial orientation), including head tilt and circling to the left. Diagnostics returned negative for EPM but positive for EHV-1. Two other horses have been exposed but are not showing clinical signs. The mare is under treatment and improving.
