Age: Over 3,270 years old! Built by Pharaoh Ramses II around 1265–1244 BC during his reign (1279–1213 BC). Imagine – constructed more than 32 centuries ago!
Iconic Facade: Four gigantic 20-meter (65-foot) statues of Ramses II sitting proudly at the entrance – they're absolutely massive and intimidating!
Dedicated to: The gods Ra-Horakhty, Amun, Ptah, and Ramses himself (he really loved showing his power! 💪)
Magical Sun Phenomenon: Twice a year, the sun's rays perfectly align to light up the inner sanctuary, illuminating three gods and Ramses (Ptah stays in shadow as the god of darkness). Dates: February 22 and October 22 every year!
Incredible Rescue Story: In the 1960s, UNESCO led a massive international effort to cut the entire temples into blocks and move them higher up the cliff to save them from flooding by Lake Nasser after the Aswan Dam was built. A true engineering miracle!
Bonus: There's also a smaller temple next door dedicated to Queen Nefertari and goddess Hathor – super romantic, as Ramses built it for his favorite wife! ❤️
