GATEWAY MYSTERIES. Do you remember how you got hooked?
I was a late bloomer when it comes to reading. I loved stories and my parents read to me a lot, but I still remember fighting my way through first grade see-and-say books at school. Motivated to complete the page and accomplish an assignment, but with very little comprehension.
Those books had no plot. And no pictures! What was the point of them?
At some point this collection of books appeared on the shelf at home, and the first three volumes of stories, poems, fairy tales and excerpts from novels drew me in.
Though none of these were necessarily crime fiction, the complexities of Harriet the Spy, the Old Man with the Bump, and the Emperor's New Clothes left a gap between the intentions of the character in questions (Harriet, the Old Man and the Emperor) and the direction of the story. Like, things didn't go the way they planned.
Since these were only excerpts for the most part, I got to live with those problems and wonder about the resolution. It wasn't all spelled out in a few pages, and the turn of events required some figuring out.
So it's only natural that when I got to explore the library on my own, the lineup of Nancy Drew books - with their yellow covers all in a row - caught my eye ;)
How about you? What got you hooked on reading?
