September 29 is Urban National Wildlife Refuge Day.

Urban National Wildlife Refuge Day celebrates the 101 urban national wildlife refuges in the United States. That is nearly 1/5 of the country's total refuges.

The day encourages us to explore the wildlife refuges near where we live. Enjoy nature at its best while hiking or canoeing. Take in the beauty and breathe in the fresh air.

If you care about ducks and geese, do not feed them!

They can live longer, healthier lives by relying on natural food sources such as aquatic plants, seeds, grasses, and insects rather than taking handouts from will-meaning humans.

For generations feeding ducks has been a pastime shared by many of us who have grown up thinking that this was an environmentally responsible and humane way to dispose of old or stale bread. However, feeding ducks and geese is actually unhealthy and potentially dangerous for the birds. This seemingly generous act, in fact, can be extremely harmful.

Bread and similar products such as crackers, chips, doughnuts, and popcorn are a great source of carbohydrates but have little nutritional value. In fact, feeding bread is equivalent to feeding your child nothing but candy. Without healthy food and proper nutrition the ducks and geese will quickly succumb to disease and death.

Now that you know, you can help by not feeding the ducks and geese and by educating other duck lovers. πŸ₯°

Would you want your country to take up a similar law? 🌳

A new law in the Philippines hopes to fix deforestation and teach young people about environmental stewardship.

Students in the country now have a final requirement in order to graduate from school: they must plant 10 trees. The new law, which came into effect on May 15, 2019, will apply to graduates from elementary and high schools, and college or university. Called the "Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act," it is seen as a valuable opportunity for young people to take action against climate change.

Do you pick up litter when you see it on the street?

If every person in the US alone picked up just one piece of litter today, there would be over 330 million fewer pieces of litter. If every person picked up 10 pieces of litter, there would be 3.3 billion fewer pieces damaging our environment.

So next time you're walking through your neighborhood, or on the beach or anywhere for that matter, pick up that piece of trash (little or big) you see near you and make a small difference that could have an immense impact on our surroundings. It's a simple concept, a simple step that will help make our home here on Earth a better and healthier place.

Are you composting your waste? And if you live in California have you seen the changes?

At the start of the year, California's new compost law officially went into effect!

Beginning on January 1, 2022, every jurisdiction in California (i.e., city, county, or special district that provides solid waste collection services) is required to provide organic waste collection services to all residents and businesses.

All California residents are also required to separate organic waste from other garbage. Organic waste includes "food, green material, landscape and pruning waste, organic textiles and carpets, lumber, wood, paper products, printing and writing paper, manure, biosolids, digestate, and sludges."

While the requirements went into effect on January 1, 2022, no fines will be imposed on residents or jurisdictions for failure to comply. In future years, businesses and residents might be subject to fines.

One thing's for sure, this law will mark a major change in how California processes food waste!

One ocean, one climate, one future – together!

We all need a healthy ocean to survive and thrive. As one of our greatest public resources, the ocean belongs to all of us, no matter where we live. Together, we can take action for our shared ocean, conserving its biodiversity and ensuring a healthy climate into the future.

The Ocean Project has coordinated the June 8 World Oceans Day for the past 17 years. It's a crucial environmental issue. We get both foods and medicines from the deep blue, and it helps to keep the climate in check. Oh, and there's this thing about water being the "lungs of the earth" β€” as it turns out, the majority of oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean. If we don't take the steps to conserve it, we'll lose a lot more than a spot for a weekend getaway. So dive in and do your part to keep big blue going strong. 😊

Celebrate Earth Day by making a few easy changes that our precious planet will appreciate.

🌎 Walk or ride your bike as much as possible.
🌎 Be aware of plastic packaging. Choose products that use glass, card, paper or metal containers over plastic. And then recycle them!
🌎 Bring your own takeaway containers.
🌎 Reduce the amount of meat and dairy you consume – better yet, remove it altogether!
🌎 Try to purchase second hand goods when possible. Thrift shopping and antiquing is really fun and so good for the planet.
🌎 Say no to fast fashion.
🌎 Use public transport.
🌎 Be really selective about the food you buy. Think about whether it will get eaten and then try to use everything you buy. One third of the food produced every year is wasted.

One thing's for sure: There’s a certain something in the air on April 19th, for that is National Garlic Day! πŸ§„

Fun fact, the first ancient civilization that truly incorporated garlic into their diet was Egypt. In 3rd millennium BC garlic was used not only by nobility, but also in medicine and religious rituals. Garlic also supposedly gave strength to Greek athletes and warriors, warded off the evil eye, and protected maidens from evil nymphs. Not to mention, vampires! 🀣

There are so many garlicky foods that we love. There's garlic bread and garlic fries for starters. If you feel as strongly about garlic as we do, then join us in celebrating National Garlic Day!

Los Angeles has a vast amount of natural open space, more than 214,000 acres, including the nation's largest municipal park – 4,014 acre Griffith Park – plus 22 miles of beaches in addition to countless parks and recreation areas. L.A.'s top nature reserves include the 153,095-acre Santa Monica National Recreation Area and the 55,000-acre Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

So, what does this all mean? Well, according to the Brookings Institution, a prestigious Washington think tank, L.A. truly is the "Emerald City," ranking greener than New York, Portland and even San Francisco.
