This is the sunset list we'd hand a friend on their first day in LA, from a cliff in Malibu to a Ferris wheel over the water ⬇️

Here are the first three:

📍 Griffith Observatory — the most reliable view in the city. Free terraces, the skyline stretching to the ocean, and the Hollywood Sign off to the northwest. Weekday evenings are calmer, and it's closed Mondays.

📍 Point Dume — a cliffside cove in Malibu for an ocean sunset. It's a short 1.1-mile hike out to the bluff, so skip the flip-flops, and it pairs well with a day up the coast.

📍 Santa Monica Pier & Palisades Park — two spots five minutes apart. Grab the beach pier for the Ferris wheel in your shot, or the bluff-top park for a quiet bench and a wide-open horizon.

⚠️ You don't end up in front of the sign — all three trails take you behind and above the letters. The front view is from a distance.
⏰ Start before 8am in summer. The trails are fully exposed with no shade and temperatures on the ridge hit hard by mid-morning.
🚗 Add 30-45 mins for parking. The lots fill fast on weekends and the walk to the trailhead adds more time than most people expect.
