The interesting thing about the scribe in this depiction is using his ear as a pencil holder, some thing I have seen my father doing when his two hands are busy.
Detail from the false door of Mery, Chief Scribe of the Royal Archives (circa 2550 BCE during the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom). He is depicted in raised relief with the tools of his profession. This piece is from his tomb in Saqqara, and is now in the Musée du Louvre (Louvre Museum), Paris, France.
