Sure! Here’s a short excerpt:

In Portugal, eating barnacles — or percebes — is a ritual that feels both primal and luxurious. Plucked from wave-battered rocks along the Atlantic coast, these strange, claw-like creatures are a delicacy treasured for their briny sweetness. At seaside taverns, they arrive steaming on platters, simply boiled in salted water. You pinch, twist, and pull, releasing a tender, ocean-scented morsel from its rough, leathery casing. It’s a taste of pure sea, intense and fleeting, best enjoyed with a cole beer and good company.

Farturas are a beloved Portuguese street food, known for their irresistibly light and crispy texture. These deep-fried, sugar-coated treats are similar to churros but larger, with a slightly denser dough made from flour, water, and yeast. The batter is piped into hot oil in long, thick spirals, creating a golden-brown exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. Once fried, farturas are generously dusted with sugar and cinnamon, adding sweetness and warmth to every bite.

What makes them so delicious is the perfect balance between crunch and softness, as well as the hint of cinnamon that elevates the simple dough. Eaten warm, they have a comforting, melt-in-your-mouth quality that pairs perfectly with a coffee or a hot drink, making them an essential part of Portuguese fairs and festivals.

Nestled in the heart of Sintra, the revitalized *Mercado da Vila* breathes new life into the historic municipal market, transforming it into a vibrant showcase of local culture. The market’s century-old charm blends seamlessly with its modern reinvention, where visitors are greeted by a stunning array of stalls featuring the finest regional products. Local farmers display fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables, while artisanal bakers fill the air with the warm scent of baked doughs. Handcrafted cheeses, cured meats, and locally pressed olive oils stand proudly alongside wines from the nearby Colares vineyards.

The market has become a gathering spot for both locals and visitors, who can indulge in freshly prepared dishes at the communal tables, enjoying a true taste of Sintra’s culinary artistry. This market is more than a place to eat– it’s a celebration of the region’s authenticity and the talents of its producers and artisans. I had the most refreshing mint infused stout with a bread filled with spicy sardines. Delicious!

The food in Cascais, a coastal town near Lisbon, is deeply rooted in its seaside location, offering an abundance of fresh seafood. Local specialties include grilled sardines 🐟, octopus salad 🐙 and caldeirada 🍲 a traditional fish stew made with a variety of locally caught fish, potatoes, and herbs. Cascais is also known for its arroz de marisco 🦐 (seafood rice) and pataniscas de bacalhau🎣 (fried codfish fritters). Many restaurants take advantage of the region’s bountiful seafood supply, pairing dishes with Portuguese wines, particularly from nearby Colares or the Lisbon wine region. Freshly baked pastéis de nata 🥧(custard tarts) make for a perfect sweet ending to any meal.
